Yelp Helps You Avoid (Or Track) Hipsters, Tørst Gets a Tasting Restaurant

KeyMe

(Photo: Scott Lynch)

From the looks of a photo that Scott Lynch added to B+B’s Flickr pool, the 7-Eleven on Bowery is now rocking the machine that keeps spare keys for you. This changes everything.
Yelp put together a “heat map” that shows how frequently certain words are mentioned in Yelp reviews. And guess what? There’s lots of mentions for the word “hipster” in the East Village and Williamsburg. We’re as shocked as you are. (Gothamist)

And Now, Watch Mr. Peanut and Kool-Aid Man in a Laser-Beam Brawl

Via our pals over at Grub Street, we learn from USA Today that Bill Hader will be the new voice of Mr. Peanut. Which is great news be-cause we’ve been looking for an excuse to put up this amazeballs video of Mr. Peanut battling Kool-Aid Man. We recently stumbled upon it while trying to remember what it was that Kool-Aid Man says after smashing through walls and ceilings. (Oh yeah, it’s “OH YEAH!”)

Have you ever wondered, “Who lives above that place?” Introducing Life Above.

You may not know them by name, but you definitely know Milon, Panna II, and Royal by sight: they’re the Bangladeshi-Indian restaurants with all the Christmas lights that share the same building on First Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets.

In between Milon and Panna II — flanked by two sidewalk barkers competing to pull people in — is a door that leads to 16 apartments, including the second-floor studio where Lawrence Chance, 50, has lived for 20 years. He recently welcomed us in to discuss the upsides and downsides of life above the iconic East Village businesses.  (In case you’re wondering: no, his apartment didn’t smell like curry.)

In Case You Were Wondering How Those Steve Jobs Sweatshirts Turned Out…

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 1.16.09 PM
Remember those Steve Jobs sweatshirts we watched Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta make in their Williamsburg studio? Well, you can now see the finished $200 pieces of “wearable fan art” in a dreamy promo video for Eckhaus Latta’s forthcoming autumn/winter line. Click on the photo above to watch the short film, by Alexa Karolinski, over at Purple. And see below for a sort of poem the designer duo sent over with it. Fun fact about Cupertino: “The Apple headquarters is a space station engulfed by foliage.”

Is This Rice Twins Book Teaser Even Trippier Than David Lynch’s NIN Video?

Sure, we could eliminate that red eye, but... (Courtesy Noah and Nathan Rice)

Sure, we could eliminate that red eye, but… (Courtesy Noah and Nathan Rice)

Noah and Nathan Rice first started creating collages when they were in high school, and the 35-year-old twin brothers aren’t stopping anytime soon. Their forthcoming book, Cherry Park Lane, explores Quantum Physics and the great myths of Earth through a series of psychedelic collages. Photos such as a girl in various yoga poses are combined with cityscapes and haunting religious imagery to create what the twins describe as a working study. “The more we study, the more it unfolds in our images,” says Nathan. In anticipation of the Rice’s latest volume of work, director William Lazarus Wacker put together a teaser that gives the new Nine Inch Nails video, directed by David Lynch, a run for its money.

Sigh, Amy Poehler Made Fun of Our Name (And a Whole Lot More From DCM)

Sigh, Amy Poehler Made Fun of Our Name (And a Whole Lot More From DCM)
The 56-hour comedy extravaganza known as the Del Close Marathon took place over the weekend. For the improv nerds amongst us, this was the chance to see some of the country’s most talented improv comedians performing at the height of their craft. For the more casual viewer, it was a chance to stalk celebrities, not to mention a whole lot of hey-you-look-familiar faces, running the gamut from Apatow-film-cameo to “that guy from The Office.” Here’s what we took away from it all.
Amy Poehler is busy as hell:

Ex-Doormen Talk ’90s Nightlife; A Tom Peeps in Greenpoint

MoMA PS1 Warm Up 2013: Original Dub

Scott Lynch

The PS1 Warm Up kicked off for the season in Long Island City this past weekend. You can see more of Scott Lynch’s photos in Bedford + Bowery’s Flickr pool. Meanwhile PS1’s VW Dome closed in Rockaway with a disco party. See B + B’s Instagram for that.
Former doormen Angelo Fabara (who it so happens was at the Dome party with us) and Thomas Onarato recall the glory days of downtown nightlife. “Everyone was in his/her persona, day or night,” says Fabara. “They didn’t go home and change into their nightclubbing outfit. These people were in it, all night long. In the East Village, they really were. You really saw a shift right at like ’98.” [Red Bull Music Academy] More →

Rockaway Concessions Gain Roberta’s Pizza, Ice Pops, Fro Yo… But Lose Booze

So, yes, Rockaway has three new outdoor drinking spots – but what about the boardwalk concessions we already know and love?

The good news is this: Roberta’s has set up a mobile pizza oven on a short stretch of boardwalk on Beach 69th Street and will be slinging pies on the weekends, weather-permitting.

Celebrate Independence Day With Some Indie Flicks — Or Not!

These upcoming screenings have us Reel Psyched.

The year 2000 marked the first time Brits elected a Mayor of London (not to be confused with the Lord Mayor of the City of London). In the running was Malcolm McLaren, best known as the manager and oft-disputed mastermind behind the Sex Pistols (he also managed the New York Dolls, Bow Wow Wow, had a solo career, and was on a couple of reality shows).
In “Malcolm McLaren: Not For Sale” — featured in Wednesday’s “New Filmmakers: Films About Music” program at Anthology –Nancy Cohen and Andy Lee attempt to track down and interview McLaren about his run for mayor. He misses a few meetings with the film crew but they catch up with him eventually.
