As of this post, there are 30 days, 18 hours, 34 minutes and 19 seconds until the reopening of Rockaway Taco, per the countdown clock. But that isn’t even the most exciting thing coming to Bushwick-by-the-Sea.
First off, the folks at Beautify Earth, a non-profit started in Santa Monica, tell us they’re launching an ambitious public art project that will brighten up a dozen buildings in the neighborhood. Alice Mizrachi, whose work was featured in the openings of Succulent and Outdoor Gallery, has already brought a mural to Sayra’s Wine Bar, and Alice Pasquini will be painting another one in April.
Others involved include  Chris Stain, JMR, Cernesto, Nicolina, Justin Horowitz and Mitchel Coffman. And East Village artist Nicolina — coming off of last summer’s epic Portals project — will work with local kids to create a mural.
Naturally, there’s an online fundraiser for the project, but why give online when you can donate at the door of the Rockaway Beach Surf Club on April 12 from 8 p.m. to midnight. Consider this fete — complete with live jazz music by Tim Otto and the Free Ride Trio — this year’s first excuse to take the A train out to the beach.
Also, this: DNA Info hears that the folks behind Roberta’s, who already have a mobile pizza oven in Rockaway, have signed a lease for a lot on Beach 96th Street, right near Rockaway Taco.
If true, it’s one more reason the peninsula needs cheap !
