The films and festivals we’re excited to check out this week.

Rockaway Taco is set to open tomorrow, and that isn’t the only great news coming out of the peninsula. Rockaway Beach Surf Club, the indoor-outdoor spot that hosted Tiki Disco’s last bash of the summer, is also back for the season (as the above trailer reveals) and will now offer food. The surf fiends who run the place have teamed up with the folks at Williamsburg restaurants Urban Rustic and Lodge to a launch Southern barbecue-inspired menu. More →
As of this post, there are 30 days, 18 hours, 34 minutes and 19 seconds until the reopening of Rockaway Taco, per the countdown clock. But that isn’t even the most exciting thing coming to Bushwick-by-the-Sea. More →
So, yeah, the loss of Odessa Bar put a damper on the weekend; luckily, Tiki Disco was there to blunt the pain with a rager at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club the next day. Downtown photographer Justin Jay, who has a bungalow nearby, dropped in and shot the photos above. Click through them to experience the torpid, dark-and-stormy-fueled madness of Tiki’s last installment of “Bushwick by the sea” and be glad you didn’t have to wait in line for the bathroom. The guys will be back in Brooklyn this Sunday, at Output’s rooftop Canopy Bar.
Our love for Chances With Wolves is such that we’ve traveled into the putrid bowels of the earth to boogie down with them. Luckily we won’t have to do that tomorrow, as the East Village Radio DJs are posting up at a much finer location — the new beer garden at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. From 7 p.m. onward, they’ll be joined by the High and Mighty Brass Band and DJ Stylus for a party so absolutely right we just had to mention it separate from our end-of-summer guide.
Heading to Rockaway Beach this 4th of July? Or whenever? Check out the latest outdoor drinking spots, starting with a B + B exclusive.
Rockaway Beach Surf Club
Last year the Rockaway Beach Surf Club was a scrappy hybrid: a surfboard storage joint, a workspace for local artisans, an occasional party (and mud wrestling) spot, and in the wake of Sandy, a relief hub. But in the next days, Long Beach native Brandon D’Leo and his partner and neighbor, firefighter Brady Walsh, expect to score a liquor license that will allow them to turn their concrete patio into a proper beer garden.
