Get on Board With the Women’s Surf Film Festival, this Weekend at Rockaway Beach

With the Olympics currently in full swing, we’re seeing badass women kicking butt on a daily basis. Whether it’s Simone Manuel making history in the pool as the first African-American woman to win swimming gold in an individual event, or the whole American gymnastics team defying the laws of physics over and over again like it’s no big deal, women in sports are killing it.

So the timing couldn’t be better for the 4th annual Women’s Surf Film Festival, taking place this weekend at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club.

Rockaway Is Getting a Swell New Surf Museum and Bakery

Get ready to wax nostalgic.

David Selig, owner of the late, great Rockaway Taco, is working with surf instructor Fernando Pires to open a museum dedicated to the history and culture of surfing in Rockaway Beach. They’re giving a shack-like makeover to the second floor of a Victorian backhouse and stocking it with classic boards and over 500 surfing movies, magazines and memorabilia, mostly sourced from Pires’ personal collection. And that’s not all Selig is cooking up: the ground floor of the building, located on Beach 96th Street, will house a new bakery, and the adjacent tropical hideaway, The Palms, is getting a chef-driven dinner series.

Bummer: Lost Weekend Waves Goodbye to LES

If you were bummed when the Parks Department declared no surfing during the blizzard, you’re probably familiar with Lost Weekend, the Lower East Side’s haven for surfheads and poseurs alike. Stocked with boards, fins, and various riptide-esque films, books and magazines, it provides a year-round taste of summer (not to mention, coffee). Now, after four and a half years on Orchard Street, the shop’s days are numbered.

Greenpoint Surf Shop Making Waves, Breaking Into the NYC Surf Scene

Shaking hands with Chris Williams and Jeff Schroeder immediately made me feel not only very un-tan but also very un-rad. The two friends recently moved from California and have opened up Union Surfboards in their new neighborhood, Greenpoint. We met inside their studio that’s just big enough to sand off a board and drink a few beers in the process. The place is dusty, but in a clean beachy sort of way and is by no means a faddy showroom– it’s a real workshop. As we spoke, Williams, despite having a broken hand, would compulsively polish one of the boards propped up on a saw horse.
