I’m not on many models’ speed dial, so I was surprised when New York-based Brazilian model Andressa Junqueira called me to tell me about a new restaurant that she and her husband chef Carlos Varella just opened in Rockaway last week.
Called Beach Bistro 96, it’s taking over the space previously occupied by Anna Bow (and before that occupied by Veggie Island) to offer “Brazilian internacional fusion” fare, with dishes ranging from Brazil’s national dish feijoada (black beans with pork meat, rice, kale, orange slices and farofa), served on Wednesdays and Saturdays, to ratatouille and temaki sushi hand rolls.
Like the rest of Bushwick, Black & White Project Space is making a weekend escape to Rockaway Beach. On Aug. 1, the studio (part of Black & White Gallery) will launch a contemporary dance series on the sand at Beach 81st Street. During Beach Sessions, four local choreographers will make use of a 360-degree stage and channel the surrounding seascape into dance.
Hot damn, it’s summer in the city. In celebration, a pop-up beach just appeared for the weekend at 171 Elizabeth Street. “Nolita Beach,” reads a blue neon sign outside the tiny gallery filled with 7,000 pounds of beach sand. Appropriately draped along its walls, like a set of functional tapestries, are beach towels created by ten prominent New York designers such as Jessica Walsh and Damien Correll. The crazed brain behind this bohemian beach is Tictail, an online marketplace where designers and artists create their own stores (think a less crunchy Etsy.)
OK, so we know this is hardly in our ‘hood, but the promise of going to space via Coney Island (gratis!) just proved too great a temptation. Hang out in a deep space disaster zone with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, while director Alfonso Cuaron keeps you on the edge of your seat.

As mentioned in our 4th of July rundown, the Rockabus now has another competitor in the Beach Bus. But what if you think Rockaway is so over now that it has a haute motel and no hard liquor on the beach, and a trip to Coney is out of the question because you’re scared the Astrotower might fall?

Earlier this week we noted that Caracas had reopened in Rockaway with a new sidekick at its Beach 106th Street concession stand.
Now a Parks Department spokesperson confirms that Rockaway Taco won’t be doing flautas at the 97th Street stand this year. But these places will be back by tomorrow (in fact, they’re opening today, according to this tweet from Motorboat and the Big Banana). More →
