The Lower East Side’s beloved Katz’s Delicatessen has changed the game for the subscription food industry by debuting a pastrami on-demand service this week. Bloomberg first broke the news that the 130-year-old Jewish deli has launched a monthly subscription box, bringing deli meats to doorsteps nationwide. More →

San Loco Says It’s Leaving the East Village Because of a 30 Percent Rent Increase

(Photo: Shannon Barbour)
Another one bites the hardshell tortilla dust. East Village favorite San Loco is set to close tonight. After 3 a.m., there will only be one location left in Manhattan, on the Lower East Side.
Jim Gaffigan Hits Katz’s With Adam Goldberg, Offers a Taste of Gaffigan Show
Jim Gaffigan, last seen being pious on the streets of Nolita, filmed on the Lower East Side with Adam Goldberg this morning, as you can see from the below Instagram video. It’s not the first time the comic has stopped into Katz’s — just check out the new extended version of the above teaser for The Jim Gaffigan Show, a full episode of which will go up on JimGaffigan.com on May 15. “I eat before I do standup, after I do standup,” he tells Goldberg while knocking down some pastrami. “Still trying to figure out a way to eat while I do standup.”
100 of the City’s Finest Fries Are Going On Dip-splay
The pop-up space at Bowery and Kenmare has seen some quirky concepts of late: a cat cafe, a Friends cafe, and a Cafe Bustelo cafe. Its latest incarnation won’t offer coffee, but rather french fries — though it won’t exactly be “offering” them. On Friday and Saturday, mayo and ketchup manufacturer Sir Kensington’s will present an exhibit highlighting “the incredible diversity of New York’s french fries.”

There’s Something (Max) Fishy Happening at the Katz’s Pop-Up Tonight
Yes, there is still a monstrous, PBR-shaped hole in our hearts since Max Fish closed last summer, but this evening a few of the folks responsible for all things Max Fish have teamed up with Klughaus Gallery and, with the help of Converse, are having a Max Fish party in the Katz’s pop-up space on Houston. Though it’s uncertain what, precisely, makes the party inherently “Max-Fishy,” other than its proximity to the recently shuttered outpost, we imagine the flyer alone is enough to bring out the old familiar faces in an “if you build it, they shall come” sort of way.
Here’s what happened last time the Fish partnered with Klughaus, for a pop-up bar at Art Basel last month.

Here’s Adam Sandler Getting Taken For a Ride at Katz’s
As you know from reading Lil Nugs, the LES blogs have been all atwitter about Adam Sandler filming his new one, “The Cobbler,” in the neighborhood. Last week a storefront on Forsyth Street was transformed into Simkin Shoe Repair for the comedy about a cobbler who can metaphysically step into the lives of his clients. Today, the Lo-Down has some photos from yesterday’s shoot and news that the crew will be back in the hood, at 400 Grand Street, the week of Dec. 8.
But this photo, just posted by Katz’s, really takes the babka. Sandler popped into the deli yesterday and posed with a couple of fans, by the looks of another photo posted on Reddit. The comments, of course, immediately devolved into two eternal debates: is Sandler funny and are the sandwiches at Katz’s overpriced?
The Katz’s Pop-Up Got Its First Celebrity Patron
After just a couple of weeks on Houston Street, the Katz’s Deli pop-up has its first celebrity buyer. According to its Facebook page, longtime Katz’s cat Jerry Stiller bought the Young and Sick piece that was going for $5,000.
We recently popped into the pop-up to speak to fifth-generation owner Jake Dell about this wild experiment in deli-inspired artwork. Watch the video above to see what he had to say.
Forget Banksy, The Katz’s Pop-Up Has Hanksy… and Kenzo Minami
A while back, we clued you into the pop-up that Katz’s Delicatessen was opening next to its longtime digs. The Space, at 203 East Houston, launches with a party at 7 p.m. tomorrow, and it turns out the deli’s taste in artists is as sharp as its pastrami blades. No, they didn’t get Banksy (he was busy hitting the Upper West Side, Staten Island and Chelsea over the weekend) but on board for the collab are self-declared “fartist” Hanksy, Baron Von Fancy (maker of the “Blow Me” balloon), Rich Tu, and Kenzo Minami.

Katz’s Delicatessen Is Opening a Pop-Up
Not to be outdone by the forthcoming Russ & Daughters Cafe, that other East Houston Street institution, Katz’s Delicatessen, has just announced its own plans for an expansion — albeit a temporary one. As part of its 125th anniversary celebration, Katz’s is moving into the adjacent storefront it usually rents out (it was last occupied by Tim Horton’s) and opening The Space, a two-month-long pop-up that will “celebrate all the local artists and designers that live and work and create art down here on the Lower East Side,” per owner Jake Dell.
