It was like something out of Grand Theft Auto.
VideoGamesNewYork, the East Village video-game store with the giant Super Mario in the window, was robbed at gunpoint late Monday night.
Two men thought to be in their early twenties entered the store around 11 p.m., pistol-whipped the clerk, and snagged an undetermined amount of cash from the register, the police say. The clerk was treated at Bellevue Hospital.

As of today, the city has installed over 1,000 miles of bike lanes. The announcement was made this afternoon on the Lower East Side, where locals pols were joined by reps from the Department of Transportation, Citi Bike and Transportation Alternatives in painting the last portion of the protected lane at Clinton Street.
The two-way, eight-foot-wide lane on Clinton Street connects the Williamsburg Bridge to South Street and, from there, the East River greenway. It’s aimed at calming traffic on Clinton Street, per a press release.

Pioneer Works isn’t just an art gallery, residency program, and book shop — it’s an educational center, too. Pay a nominal fee and get learn’d on the basics of paper marbling, wet plate photography, and how to whip up a mole sauce from scratch– you know, cute stuff. So a two-day course, “How to Master the New York City Police Department,” taught by NYU urbanization researcher Patrick Lamson-Hall, kinda stopped me in my browsing tracks with its promise of a historical look at the NYPD and discussion about how to improve community-police relations. One of Patrick’s early suggestions: “As stupid as it sounds, maybe they need to start every day with yoga.”

Yesterday’s opening night brought a ferris wheel, sausage and peppers, raw clams, ribs, cigars, and much more to the area surrounding Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at North 8th Street and Union Avenue. If you missed the mass and candlelit procession, don’t worry — there’s no need to say ten Hail Marys, cuz the party’s just getting started: Blood Brothers will be belting out some Springsteen tonight in the church gym.

Good news for Greenpointers who plan to cycle into Long Island City for PS1’s Warm-Up and outdoor flicks at Socrates Sculpture Park: the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge just got protected bike lanes.
The man behind EV Grieve is finally out and about in the East Village.
“Hello, my name is John Elsasser,” he posted last night, “and I have been running this website for the past eight years or so.”
The blogger had remained anonymous during all that time, even as he was quoted in the New York Times as a neighborhood authority and even as his site racked up links and plaudits from countless other mainstream media outlets. (Last year the Village Voice named EV Grieve the city’s Best Local Website and praised it for “breaking news about the East Village and providing a forum for brutally honest commentary from its current and former denizens.”)
Elsasser wrote that he had long thought about revealing his name, but dragged his feet. “However,” he wrote, “it seems easier now to make this disclosure, helped in part that a news site has designs on publishing a ‘Who is EVG?’ article in the days/weeks ahead.”’
