Photos + Video: The Coney Island Mermaid Parade Was the Place to Sea and Be Seen

Throngs of New Yorkers festooned in sparkly neon fishnets, purple glitter and dolphin-shaped crowns descended on Coney Island this past Saturday for the 36th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Beachgoers were treated to frolicking sharks atop floats and merrymakers in various stages of undress (and suitably fishy gowns), along with notable figures like Mermaid Queen Amanda Palmer and King Neptune Neil Gaiman. Love, sweat, sea spray and mermaid pride mingled in the air above the jubilant crowd.

Watch our video, above, to see all the action and hear from the parade’s organizers. Then click through our slideshow, below, for more.

A photo of a peacock on the subway created a social media frenzy on Friday. People crowed not just about the peacock, but also the fellow passengers who seemed unfazed by the feathery giant. Only in New York City, New York City exclaimed.

We wondered whether the mystery bird was the one and only Dexter the Peacock, so we reached out to his owner, Ventiko. Turns out the subway peacock didn’t belong to the Bushwick-based conceptual photo and performance artist, but Ventiko had a theory: “By the way the human is holding a small stick with the bird perched on it, it must be stuffed.”

Video: Busking for Benjamins With "Gypsy Jazz"

“One day we were playing a really sad song, and when I finished a girl came over and hugged me,” says Jordi Nus as he adjusts his violin. His cheeks turn a deeper shade of pink and he grins. It’s Thursday morning and Nus, a violinist, is performing in the Delancey Street Station with his friend, Pedro Curvello, a singer and guitar player.
While the two guys in their mid-20s look like your standard buskers as they stand in front of their amplifier and open guitar case, they’re actually graduate students in NYU’s film scoring program. They started busking a month ago to complement their composition work and have a set of 15 songs that they play – a mix of “gypsy jazz,” folk and alternative music.
