99ยข Fresh Pizza, which was turning out dollar slices before the bros from 2 Bros were in diapers, has opened its ninth location — and this one’s in the East Village, right in the midst of all the knockoffs.
If you’ve had it, you of course know that this isn’t the classic NYC slice of the Joe’s Pizza variety, but it definitely beats a lot of the other dollar dives: there are plenty of bald spots on the Domino’s-style crust, but the cheese is adequately greasy and goopy, instead of having the consistency of a Citi Bike handlebar grip.
$2.57 gets you two slices and a can of soda, and $8 gets you a 18″ pie. Toppings (mushroom, sausage, pepperoni, black olives, and pineapple) are 50 cents extra. Beef patties are also available.
