Hate to break it to you but the band to see this week, Royal Headache (Mark E. Smith and Morrissey moved to Australia and had a baby, basically) has sold out two freaking shows, one at Palisades and another at Rough Trade. What a royal… pain in the ass these guys are, coming all the way from Upside Down America only to play a couple of shows in what is inarguably the center of the goddamn universe! You’re officially counted as #tragic if you don’t have a ticket, but don’t go plotting any public beheadings just yet, there are plenty of worthy alternatives to wrap your ears around.

Week in Live Music: Last Punk Bits Before the Big Fest and Thank Heavens For Indie That’s… Different

1545169_10152483347651706_2017354149556436323_nWelcome to another end of the work week. You’re probably busy eyes-locked on the clock counting down the seconds until you can sprint out the door, straight into the nearest bodega, and pop the cap off your brown bag to bliss. Too busy to look for what the hell you’re gonna do with your ears tonight. Lucky for you we have a few stellar options lined up for tonight and beyond. We have a tiny dose of punk for you, but we’re holding the Big Gulp until next week, so get ready. In the meantime, step outside of the only genre that matters for a few minutes and you know, expand your mind.

Backstage at Shea Stadium With Adam Reich of Titus Andronicus and So So Glos

Shea Stadium, the DIY music venue in Bushwick, celebrates its fifth anniversary on July 4, thanks in large part to co-founder Adam Reich. Reich is Brooklyn born and raised, and started Shea in ’09 with childhood friends and current bandmates The So So Glos. Besides running a business and playing in the Glos, Reich is also a music producer and plays guitar in Titus Andronicus (releasing a 7″ and July 7). Reich sat down with me on one of Shea’s signature ratty old couches and told B+B a little about himself.

The Macaulay Culkin Show

This stand-up show is hosted not by Macaulay Culkin but rather by Brett Davis, whose comic alteregos include wrestler Bobby Blayze, singer Craig Evanhalen and others. But just because Mac isn’t actually involved doesn’t mean the show doesn’t get its share of big names (in the comedy world, anyway) like Wyatt Cenac, SNL’s Sasheer Zamata, and Dave Hill. This installment features Gavin McInnes, Leo Allen, Aparna Nancherla, The Lucas Bros, Jo Firestone, Julio Torres, Anthony Atamanuik, John Early, and more.

The So So Glos Promise Their ‘Wrecking Ball’ Video Is Better Than Miley’s

Back in June, the So So Glos invited us into their Bushwick HQ, Shea Stadium, and played “House of Glass” off of their newly released LP, “Blowout.” Now they’re back with a cinematic video for “Wrecking Ball” that they promise is better than Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” video, even if none of the boys got nekkid for it. But is it better than Bruce Springsteen’s “Wrecking Ball”? Grab a coffee and a donut and find out.

Watch Seattle Surf Rockers La Luz Play a Seattle Pizzeria, Right Here in New York

If you missed La Luz’s first New York City show Sunday at Mercury Lounge, you’ll want to catch them at Shea Stadium tonight. The band, formed a year ago in Seattle, plays surf rock tinged with lead singer Shana Cleveland’s fluid guitar riffs, Marian Li Pino’s sometimes punishing percussion, Alice Sandahl’s mesmerizing keyboard work, and haunting four-piece harmonies.

This Week, So Much Power Pop

We’ve already outlined a couple of worthwhile shows in our weekend events round-up (reminder: Death by Audio. Tonight. Speedy Ortiz, Roomrunner, and California X. You won’t spend a better $8 all year), but this being New York City, there are, of course, several more shows worth attending over the next week, a few of which are highlighted below. For more complete listings, see the B+B calendar.

Play Room | The So So Glos at Shea Stadium

Introducing Play Room, where we hang with bands in their rehearsal spaces — and have them play us a tune.

The So So Glos are about as Brooklyn as they come: frontman Alex Levine, his brother Ryan and their step-brother Zach Staggers are natives of Bay Ridge (guitarist Matt Elkin hails from Connecticut). They recently welcomed us into Shea Stadium in Bushwick to talk about the multipurpose space they co-founded, and to give us an exclusive performance of “House of Glass,” off the LP they just released on Shea Stadium Records.

“Blowout” is available on iTunes, Bandcamp, etc. and will soon be in stores. Or, catch the So So Glos at Glasslands on July 9.
