East Williamsburg DIY venue and recording studio Shea Stadium announced a $50,000 crowdfunding initiative today, with the end goal of turning the space into a “completely legal, 100% permitted venue.” In early March, the venue had announced an indefinite closure on Facebook in light of multiple violations and show shutdowns.

Even if right now the weather’s making you feel like your bones will never dry, your shoes will always be soggy, and that possibly your muscles will continue spazzing forever and ever, hold on for two more days. And in the mean time, repeat over and over “Free, free at last!” Slowly, your hands will start to defrost, color will return to your face, and a your eyes will even start to twinkle. By the time Thursday rolls around you can let it all out, by placing your booty on the Bossa Nova dance floor as soon as you’re able for the venue’s third annual Synthicide party.

Duchess Says is the ’80s freak-wave/post-punk band you never knew you were dying for. Hailing from Montreal, they’re out to prove that Montreal’s really gaining on NYC right now in every way. And who can resist a band that sounds a whole like like what would happen if the Cars and the Slits had two babies, both born under the darkest of stars, then those babies mated with Halloween incarnate, then all the resulting offspring started a band. Yup. Picture that one.

Here’s a little history lesson: Dan (Licata) + Joe (Pera) + Charles (Gould) used to host this stand up showcase on a monthly basis at UCB East, but, apparently, that wasn’t enough for the people. They demanded more and more shows—one young man even self-immolated outside of the Two Boots next to UCB crying “I just want this show to be weekly!” before expiring in a flash of flames.

Wednesdays With A “W”: Wormholes

This is the second iteration of a monthly “art party,” sporting a whimsical theme and featuring a slew of performances from artists of all disciplines, including live painting, interactive performance art, a human canvas, a bug petting zoo, and an alien experiment. Naturally eschewing any average theme for an event, this evening is themed for wormholes. You heard that right. Whether it be actual worms digging holes or folks traveling through space and time or something else entirely, expect excitement and unusual sights at every turn.

Uniform, Shredded Nerve, Super Secret Special Guests

Next week Uniform returns to the stage following a show with the Soft Moon earlier this month at Market Hotel. This time, they’ll take their rip-roaring noise punk act to the Acheron where the band will be joined by some super mysterious, ultra top-secret special guests plus one ear-splitting noise set by an act most beloved. Expect speedy, metallic guitar monologues, speaker-quashing feedback, and vocal chord shredding screams.

Yin Yangs, Sexy Neighbors, Citizen Blast Kane, World’s Greatest
Friday, Jan. 15, 8 pm at Shea Stadium: $10
The Yin Yangs were busy bees in 2015– what with dropping their new album (they premiered the track “21st century” on B+B over the summer), playing loads and loads of shows, and lending some of their members to the indie film They Read By Night (a veritable who’s-who of one particular sect of the Bushwick DIY scene). So if you haven’t had a chance to see their bass-driven guttural noise punk in person, here’s a wonderful opportunity.
To sweeten the deal, Shea also locked down the likes of Sexy Neighbors, who bear a remarkable resemblance to Television (which I already told y’all about back when they played Trans-Pecos).

Our picks include a brand new project from a longtime blues punk devotee, The Dark Prince of Garage, and sugar-sweet disco that’s not afraid to hit sour notes. All that and more below this here line.
What the hell happened? Seems as if Fall came out of nowhere, and fast. Dead leaves on the gross-ass ground, trash tornadoes from the sudden gusts of ice wind, and a slanted sun that disappears before you’ve had the chance to get out of bed. We’ve already heard people planning to split for the Waste Coast (lame) before it gets ugly. Thankfully, we’ve got a number of bands blowing into town whose sounds hail from warmer climates, reminding us we can always travel to these places in our minds when shit hits the fan.

Yeah, yeah we’re well aware there’s a holiday weekend– for some of us, anyway– coming up soon, but all the better to pack in some legit shows this week before you pack your bags. Besides, just face it, you’re probably doing something not that far from grilling/hanging/sun-roasting/eating/boozing/eating/boozing and acting generally like a beached whale on a bender this weekend anyway, so might as well sweat out the last of your bikini blob at these bangers.
