Free (Yep, Free) Midnight Screenings Coming to the Relaunched Roxy Cinema

Roxy Cinema. Credit: Roxy Hotel.

Tribeca’s Roxy Hotel has re-launched its much-loved cellar theater Roxy Cinema with new concessions and a big slate of summer programming — including free midnight screenings and events with indie acts like TV Baby and Beach Fossils.

The cinema, which specializes in “first-run, independent, classic, art-house and foreign film, both played on digital and 35mm,” is one of the few locations in New York where you can enjoy good beer, wine, and even champagne during a movie. Cocktails are also reportedly on the way. They’re also beefing up their snacks-and-candy concessions.

Governor’s Ball Announces Lineup, Wakes the Dead and Wrangles in King Diva

(Via Governor's Ball)

New York City’s very own massive music festival, Governor’s Ball just announced its epic lineup for 2016. If it wasn’t for the consistently good curation each summer on Randall’s Island, it’s hard to imagine anyone would suffer the trappings of #ThatFestivalLyfe: water-gouging, being herded around like cattle and jammed, sweaty and dehydrated amongst so many feather-adorned man buns and general douchebaggery.

Along with partner Rose Fathers, the musicians and friends recently opened Palisades, an intimate, welcoming dive with a generous stage.

House of Vans Returns With Charles Bradley, Mac Demarco, STRFKR, Chrome Sparks, and More

unnamedHouse of Vans — yet another one of our favorite things about summer in NYC — just announced its initial lineup, and RSVPs for the opening show (which, for the first time, will be part of the Northside Festival) open today at noon.

This fourth installment of the series is similar to previous ones, right down to the skate bowl and beer garden: there’ll be two parties a month at the cavernous 25 Franklin Street in Greenpoint, starting with a June 12 show featuring soul crooner Charles Bradley (who just performed on Kimmel), slacker rocker Mac Demarco, and New Orleans singer-songwriter Benjamin Booker. The second show, on June 19, features STRFKR, Poolside and Chrome Sparks. July and August shows will be announced at a later date.

You can RSVP for everything here.

TONSTARTSSBANDHT + Sean Nicholas Savage + Epic Sound Installation = lkasjdhgikpasjhdfoskjf

We can say without hyperbole that this is by far the coolest thing that will ever happen in the history of mankind.

This Sunday, experimental/weirdo/brilliant musician Sean Nicholas Savage is bringing his signature awesome weirdness to Signal gallery in Bushwick. Savage is a performance character of sorts (like Boy George, but hipper) who first rose to infamy in the illegal after hours scene in Montreal (the same scene that gave birth to Grimes).

Anyone who plays the ukulele and admits to having worn neon bathing suits in high school is fine by us, which is why we’re like, totally 100% behind Kay Kasparhauser, frontwoman of local band The Prettiots. Though Kasparhauser says she “wouldn’t be disappointed or insulted if someone underestimated us and thought we were just some kids making pop,” there’s a sense of charm and self-awareness – particularly to their lyrics – that makes The Prettiots much more than that.

Local favorites Caveman played a “super secret” free show at R Bar yesterday evening, largely to bid farewell to their pals before heading out on tour with Phosphorescent. It was, in the words of Caveman guitarist Jimmy Carbonetti, “great vibes” all around… perhaps because members of the band had indulged in their invented beverage, The Gauntlet.

Watch Zosia Mamet of ‘Girls’ Play With Some Fake Boobs

Saturday, The Cabin Sisters played a set at the Grand Victory in Williamsburg. The folk duo has two claims to fame: one is that Zosia Mamet of “Girls” and “Mad Men” is a Cabin Sister. (The other sister is Clara Mamet, an actress on ABC’s “The Neighbors.”)

I first met Stefan Marolachakis in 2010 when he was tending bar at Heathers, just a few blocks away from his apartment overlooking Tompkins Square Park. He still lives there, but these days he’s writing for ESPN, Nylon, and The Fader, and drumming for Caveman, which just released its self-titled sophomore album via Fat Possum.

Black Flag Annihilated Last Week With a Super Secret Show

Black Flag Annihilated Last Week With a Super Secret Show
Depending on whose tweets you prefer, Black Flag spent Friday and Saturday either “destroying” or “kicking the crap out of” Warsaw, only to go on to do a Sunday show at a venue so secret that if anyone gave up the name (Grand Victory) they probably would’ve had to disappear to Hong Kong. (Seriously, the email confirmation was all: “Any social media or other discovered leaks of location may result in denied entry.”)
