Search Party may be (maeby?) the most Williamsburgy show ever. Alia Shawkat (the indie darling best known as Maeby from Arrested Development) stars as a millennial who becomes an amateur sleuth when a former college classmate goes missing, so you might call it Nancy Drew meets The Bedford Stop. And the marketing folks at TBS are going all-out to appeal to their show’s home neighborhood: In addition to the banner ads right here at Bedford + Bowery, there are murals on Wythe Avenue. And now the coup de grâce: a pop-up shop on Bedford that will double as a venue for events featuring 2 Dope Queens and Widowspeak.
Maybe it’s because it stars Alia Shawkat, who famously played Maeby in Arrested Development, or maybe it’s because it plumbs narcissist millennials in Williamsburg (aka hits close to home), but it’s safe to say Search Party is the comedy we’re most anticipating now that the current seasons of BoJack Horseman and Vice Principals are out of the bag. Back in March, we saw the pilot at SXSW and heard from Shawkat about her character, an aimless post-grad who becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to a classmate who went missing. Now the show has a new trailer and a release date of November 21.
Lawrence Levine and Sophia Takal have gotten a lot of great attention for previous works like Green, directed by Takal, and Gabi On The Roof In July, directed by Levine. The married couple’s latest effort, Wild Canaries — directed by Levine, produced by Takal, and featuring both of them as actors — is about a Brooklyn couple who suspects foul play when a neighbor drops dead in her rent-controlled apartment. It premieres at SXSW this Saturday. Levine is originally from New Jersey but went to high school in the Bronx. We caught up with him by phone and talked about growing into wider resources, such as a cast including Alia Shawkat of Arrested Development, Jason Ritter, and Greenpoint fixture Kevin Corrigan.
Only one episode of Comedy Central’s Broad City has aired so far (the second airs 10:30 p.m. tonight), but the ratings must have been stupendous — stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are going on a 15-state tour.
