Only one episode of Comedy Central’s Broad City has aired so far (the second airs 10:30 p.m. tonight), but the ratings must have been stupendous — stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are going on a 15-state tour.
Abbi (the character) is a janitor at a SoulCycle-like gym, who uses her hard-earned wages to stock the refrigerator for her roommate’s non-rent-paying boyfriend. Ilana (the character) likes to videochat with her friends while having sex and listening to Lil Wayne. Abbi seems like she’d be a bit of a puritan if she weren’t constantly corrupted by Ilana. Together they have ditched work, smoked weed, gotten drunk in public, and cleaned an apartment in their underwear (for the promise of money). And that was all episode one.
Before coming to cable and bringing on executive producer Amy Poehler, Broad City was a web series for four years. There are a couple dozen episodes to watch on YouTube.
Tickets for Broad City Live go on this Friday at noon. Prices very by venue, but the tour will conclude on April 5 at The Bell House in Gowanus. Those tickets are $25.
Technically, the tour begins in Cambridge, Mass. on March 4. But on February 17 Glazer and Jacobson are having a sold-out $5-per-seat preview at their alma mater, UCB.
Details about what, exactly, you’ll be seeing when you buy a ticket to this show remain opaque. UCB’s website describes Broad City Live as a “unique experience” and “a delicately crafted hour of fun.”
Maybe Glazer — who, it has to be said, bears an uncanny resemblance to Alia Shawkat, aka Maeby from Arrested Development — will pass out Kombucha-filled pimp cups while Jacobson draws caricatures (she’s published two coloring books). Or they’ll videochat from opposite sides of the stage. Either way, we’re excited.
