Maybe it’s because it stars Alia Shawkat, who famously played Maeby in Arrested Development, or maybe it’s because it plumbs narcissist millennials in Williamsburg (aka hits close to home), but it’s safe to say Search Party is the comedy we’re most anticipating now that the current seasons of BoJack Horseman and Vice Principals are out of the bag. Back in March, we saw the pilot at SXSW and heard from Shawkat about her character, an aimless post-grad who becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to a classmate who went missing. Now the show has a new trailer and a release date of November 21.
Sure, that’s a ways from now, but the timing may end up being for the best: “You can binge the entire season Thanksgiving week!” notes Charles Rogers, who created the show with his Fort Tilden co-creator, Sarah Violet-Bliss. “Trump will be president!!” Ok, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
As we’ve noted round these parts before, Shawkat also stars in Adam Green’s papier-mâché retelling of Aladdin, which features Natasha Lyonne as Aladdin’s mom, Andrew Van Wyngarden of MGMT as the Guardian of the Lamp, Francesco Clemente as the genie, Har Mar Superstar as a druggie, and Zoe Kravitz as a redneck who demands a 3D-printed asparagus chair (downtown fixtures Leo Fitzpatrick and Sophia Lamar are also in the mix). If you didn’t get to bask in the wackiness of Adam Green’s Aladdin back when it screened at The Hole, worry not: Green is taking a print of the film on tour with him. On September 22 at Gramercy Theatre, he’ll show the flick before playing songs from the soundtrack. By the looks of the above video for “Me From Far Away,” released last week, he may well perform in his Aladdin costume.
The only bummer is that Macaulay Culkin, who also stars in the film, won’t be there to debut some songs off of the Pizza Underground’s forthcoming album.
