On Saturday, Astor Place became home to the second annual Witchsfest USA, a free Pagan street fair hosted by the NYC Wiccan Family Temple that aimed to raise funds to build a temple for the city’s Wiccan community.
The celebration, inspired by London’s Witchfest International, was pretty small — just a few tents set up on one block. I actually found myself asking someone, “Where’s Witchsfest located in relation to Kmart?” But attractions such as an astrology workshop, belly dancing class, and countless tarot readers managed to draw a small coven of people. Everyman Espresso has had a lot brewing lately. Earlier this week, it closed its East 13th Street store for a month of renovations and opened a pop-up at Tribeca’s Bikini Bar. All this while being sued by the state of New York for allegedly appropriating its “I ♥ NY” logo.
But Sam Lewontin, who manages the shop, is trying not to think about that right now. He’s more focused on the menu at the summer pop-up, which he’s hoping will touch off a radical new trend. It’s among the first in the country to offer espresso drinks that rival cocktails in their complexity. The Queen Mary, for instance, combines tomato jam, citrus, herb and AeroPressed Kenyan Ndaroni. Rest assured, Todd Patrick is doing more than just firing off e-mails this evening. As an aperitif to the imminent re-opening of the Market Hotel, he has organized a complete retrospective of Showpaper, the bi-weekly publication he founded in 2007 that immediately became the go-to source for every DIY all-ages show in New York City and the tri-state area. More than 160 issues will adorn the walls at the renovated Market Hotel, and most of them will be available to take home. The party is slated to end at 9 p.m. tonight, so get thee over to Market Hotel ASAP.

If you were one of the people who thought, “Ugh, that’s the end of that place” when the Bossa Nova Civic Club got that write-up in The Times last month, well then you’re probably also the type that will say, “See, I told you so,” when you hear that, according to the Bushwick boite’s Facebook page, it got a visit from the FDNY and now must limit capacity at its sweat-drenched dance parties.

Todd P just sent out an epic missive explaining why 285 Kent won’t be among the venues canceling Cold Cave shows due to the addition of controversial opening act Boyd Rice. Patrick says that since Cold Cave added the provocative noise musician to the bill of tomorrow night’s show, 285 Kent has been subject to a “small uproar” involving “multiple oblique threats, several curse-laden late night crank calls, anonymous threatening text messages.”
But even though Rice, per Patrick, is a “washed up 80’s era troll” who “has spent the last 30 or so years saying truly disgusting things – everything from palling around with the KKK to wearing Nazi uniforms to advocating the subjugation of women and the efficacy of rape,” the show must go on in the interest of free speech. There will, however, be “literature at tables set up in the lobby, explaining who Boyd Rice is and what his shameful history entails.” Read the entire letter for yourself — it’s a doozy. More →
Oh hey, here’s the roofdeck of Jupiter 21, the luxury building, opening July 15, where a TD Bank will replace the former Mars Bar on the ground floor. There’s no pool up here, but a sales rep told us the deck will eventually feature “misting stations” and outdoors showers — because why would anyone want to sunbathe by the wet bar and be all gross when they get back to their $3,475 studio? Speaking of Brooklyn-Manhattan empires: Greenpoint’s Café Grumpy appears to be on a slow, steady course of dominating Manhattan. Last month, Café Grumpy Time’s Square was announced – and now? Looks like they’re set to arrive at Grand Central Station. [The Real Deal]

This morning, a line of eager swimmers stretched half the length of McCarren Park Pool and poured onto the sidewalk. Why so many people on day two? Probably because everyone read about the opening . According to a cop on hand, the pool’s unofficial website flubbed up, marking today as the season opener. The pool’s location in “romantic, downtown Greenpoint” (see mildly NSFW screenshot below) is maybe also not the most accurate. More →
Scaffolding has gone up in front of Mary Help of Christians Church and demolition work has commenced at the rectory next door, but hey… at least the contractor’s logo is in keeping with the spirit of the place?
The small group of ex-parishioners who still pray the rosary in front of the 96-year-old church on East 12th Street are really going to have to hope for a miracle now: Bedford + Bowery has discovered that a few days ago, the Landmarks Preservation Commission rejected calls for an archaeological study to be conducted, making it all the more likely that Doug Steiner, who bought the property for $41 million back in November, will demolish it and replace it with an 80/20 mix of market-rate and affordable housing.
