It’s been a long time coming for the three owners of Our Wicked Lady, Bushwick’s newest art and music studio space-cum-bar, but tonight they can finally kick back and celebrate the grand opening. Leading up to this sure-to-be-saucy affair is something you should probably get your butt to if you count yourself a Mac Demarco fan. See, there’s something called an Ass Pass…

‘Operotica’: It’s When Burlesque and Opera Come Together

If you tend to doze off at the opera, rest assured this one’ll rouse (and arouse?) you: Sarah Screams’ forthcoming show at Drom will combine opera and burlesque to create what can only be called “Operotica.” As if that’s not enough, the night of arias and areolas will also feature excerpts from a bonkers-sounding “porn opera.”

Richard Kern’s New Book, Exhibit Is a ’90s Grunge Version of a Barbershop Lookbook

unnamedYou know those cheeseball lookbooks you see at places like Supercuts, that show you how you’d look with a bowl cut? Well, none other other than photographer Richard Kern, the thinking man’s Terry Richardson, has teamed up with an uber-hip Williamsburg hair salon to make a grunge- and porn-inspired version of them.

(At Least) 5 Rad Shows Happening This Week

Wand and Honey at Death By Audio (and possibly, maybe Ty Segall)
Wand, the garage-psych outfit from California that’s been opening for Ty Segall just before he absconds the Land of The Free for the Eurozone, will play a show of their own on Tuesday night at DBA. Oh yeah, and rumor has it Ty Segall might actually show his face as well. Ty’s appearance isn’t completely out of the question — after all, his video for “Goodbye Bread” was shot inside the DIY venue, and DBA is closing soon, meaning this could be his last chance to play a venue he’s clearly pretty fond of. Definitely joining Wand are the local dudes from Honey.

Lauryn Hill Killing Us Softly With Her Ticket Prices; Can’t Fight Veruca Salt

Time again for Good Shows, our weekly roundup of what’s good in live music.

Take a trip back to the ’90s with grunge-rock babes Veruca Salt. The band has reunited to tour for the first time since 1995, but just because they’ve been off the map doesn’t mean they’re out of energy. They’re still wrecking eardrums left and right. Music Hall of Williamsburg, Friday, July 25 at 9 p.m., tickets $25

Good Shows: Feminist Punk, Norwegian Soul and, Um, ‘Intensindie’

Here’s what’s good in live music this week.

Leeds-based indie rock outfit Kaiser Chiefs have hopped the pond to promote their new album, Education, Education, Education & War. The band is famous for rocking festivals with big stage sets and light shows, pulling every stunt short of a miniature Stonehenge. Their most recognizable single is probably “Ruby,” released back in ’07. Bottom line, you will not be bored at this show.
Webster Hall, East Village, Friday, June 20 @ 8 p.m., tickets $30.

Kelis, Biz Markie, and More Throwbacks in Our Live Music Round-Up

Welcome to Good Shows. Here’s what’s good in live music this week.

When you think of Kelis, chances are “Milkshake” (the video for which was shot at Relish diner — now La Esquina — in Williamsburg) is the first thing that comes to mind. (You’re welcome. That’ll be stuck in your head for weeks.) What you might not know is that the R&B singer’s latest album, Food, is straight up tasty-ass funk.
