Citi Bike’s Getting Generous With a Slot-Happy Expansion Plan

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today that, starting in August (er, just in time for the end of summer), Citi Bike will be installing new docking stations for their ubiquitous, sluggish tourist-mobiles in several new zones– all over Manhattan up to 110th Street and several Brooklyn neighborhoods including, among others, Gowanus, Park Slope, and Red Hook– as well as expanding their slots in already covered areas. The announcement comes after what was Citi Bike’s “busiest year ever” in 2015, when around 100,000 annual members took more than 10 million rides.

Thought Citi Bike would result in “total carnage”? WRONG. Unless you count some punny vandalism, the apocalypse on two wheels has yet to materialize. In the East Village, at least.

“Everyone thought Citi Bike was going to be way worse, with accidents all over the place, things getting stolen left and right,” a police source told Bedford + Bowery. Not quite: Citi Bike-related crime has been surprisingly low.

What a Shiti Thing to Do…

A few weeks ago, writer-photographer Kyle Dean Reinford tweeted, “surprised I haven’t seen an easily applicable sticker that changes citibike to shitibike.”

Et voilà! Last week we spotted just such a sticker, and now someone has gone and shitified the bikes themselves, at the station at Bedford and Metropolitan. Reactions on Twitter range from “LOL this is hilarious” to “get a fucking life.”
