Adios, El Sombrero; a Tale of Two Williamsburgs

(Animated GIF: Patrick Hogan)

As you’ll recall, Brooklyn artist Rostarr popped into our Newsroom this past weekend to paint a mural. We made a gif of the installation and now you can watch it, above, forever and ever and ever.

In other news: Judy Rapfogel, chief of staff to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, said she was completely in the dark about the fact that her husband allegedly stole more than $1 million from a poverty charity and stashed thousands in the couple’s Lower East Side apartment. [NY Daily News] More →

Eight years ago, Erica Dobbs – owner of Greenpoint’s fantastic vintage clothing store, Ana Chronos – was living in the West Village, working as an account executive and, as it turns out, converting her one bedroom apartment into a giant walk-in closet filled with vintage clothes.

“When I moved to New York, I needed to dress up all the time and I hated what was out there,” said Dobbs from inside her cozy two-year-old business on Franklin Street. “I liked designer things, but I realized the craftsmanship was shit and I started buying vintage on the regular and really collecting.” Eventually she turned the passion into a business, and tonight, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., she’ll celebrate two years on Franklin with booze from Pavan Liqueur, snacks from Ovenly, music by Mistri Misrach and The Spookfish, and more. Best part: the first 15 people get 50% off her rare vintage finds, and everyone else gets 30% off all night long.

James Levy of Reputante on Signing With Julian Casablancas and Playing With Zoë Kravitz

“The Cult Records thing is my fourth record deal, but it’s the coolest one for me,” James Levy told B+B on his band Reputante signing to the Julian Casablancas-owned label. “The label is an interesting community and I wanted to be a part of Julian’s vision. Everybody on it is part of the family to some degree. I was tired of signing record deals and not being excited about it.”

The Yippie! Museum avoided a quick and bitter end yesterday and won more time in its dramatic fight against foreclosure.

The yippies’ legal battle to maintain their three-story building at 9 Bleecker Street, with its unpaid $1.4 million mortgage, has dragged on since 2009 when Centech LLC, their lender, filed a complaint to obtain a judgement for foreclosure and sale on the premises. Yesterday at New York State Supreme Court, Noah Potter, a lawyer for imprisoned yippie leader Dana Beal, won an extension to gather more information. “I have a month and a half to get documents to plead Dana’s case,” Potter told B+B.

Sal Mander prefers sleeping in his van in the winter to anywhere he’s ever slept. “It’s cozy! . . . I sleep soundly in there,” he said convincingly. But, still. “The first time it dropped below freezing and I went into my van to sleep, I remember sitting on my memory-foam mattress, and it felt like I was sitting on a stack of, like, refrigerated cardboard boxes. I went, ‘Oh shit, I got into the wrong van.’ . . . And then I realized, ‘No, it’s just frozen!’” But Mander swears “once you pull two or three thick blankets over your head and breathe a few breaths, in five minutes, you’re warm.”

“I’m actually fairly shy,” said Eric Gorsuch last Friday night, just hours before he strutted onto a small stage on the Bowery, flicked off some six-inch heels, and stripped down to a thong that resembled a sparkling sea anemone. “I’m not the best conversation starter,” he said. “I’m very self-conscious.” This is a man who, at six-foot-four in height, regularly does the splits upside down over a tiny stool, with abs painted on before each show.

Long-time Community Board 3 member and E.V. bar owner David McWater will resign from his volunteer post following controversy that his spot on the State Liquor Authority subcommittee conflicted with his duties as an owner of three local bars. [Village Voice]
