Earlier today we gathered New Yorkers’ memories of their random encounters with the late, great Lou Reed. This one, from our contributor Susan Keyloun, might just be the most unexpected encounter of them all.
As a native New Yorker, I tend to leave touristy things to the tourists. I have never taken a carriage ride through Central Park and I avoid Times Square. But when I was invited to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show last year, I accepted – – not a tourist destination per se, but not necessarily a place where you’ll find mobs of New Yorkers either. Hundreds gathered for a rally in Union Square this afternoon, to protest the not guilty verdict in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. On the scene was organizer Kevin Powell of “Real World” fame, mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio (who has said that his Afro-sporting son looks like Trayvon Martin), and an attorney for Kharey Wise, one of the Central Park Five. An uninvited guest popped by Anthony Weiner’s Gramercy apartment building this morning, in the form of a giant inflatable rat. Union members have gathered in front of the mayoral hopeful‘s Park Avenue South address to protest a controversial cost-cutting measure in his education platform. And they aren’t exactly being subtle about it: “DON’T LET THE SEXTING PERV BE MAYOR,” reads one sign. More →
