Now that beachspreading is the new manspreading and you’re bound to get dirty looks (or, even worse, get dragged on Twitter) if you bring your trusty VW Camper Van tent to the shore, you’re going to need a better way to keep those harmful UV rays away. Luckily, sunscreen towers are coming to Rockaway, just in time for the Labor Day rush.

BrightGuard is set to bring one of these sunscreen towers to Rockaway, at Beach 95th Street, this Sunday. The towers dispense free 30-SPF sunscreen with the wave of a hand, so you can slather up without having to reach for that sandy, beer-splashed bottle of Hawaiian Tropic. The dispensers will be stationed on the Rockaway boardwalk until September 10, and will hopefully be back all of next summer.

Rockaway already got some individual dispensers earlier this summer. (Back in June, about 100 of them had been placed around city beaches; they were proposed by City Comptroller Scott Stringer, donated in part by the non-profit Impact Melanoma, and are maintained by the Parks Department.) But this new tower holds four of the dispensers and also packs an umbrella, so you can practically jump straight from the ferry into the loving arms of UV protection.

Hopefully, these things will be maintained better than the cell-phone charging stations that came to Rockaway a few years ago. To get an idea of how they work, check out the video below.
