Who will win the Golden Raspberry?

The answer will be determined at the inaugural East Village Queer Film Festival, coming to The Wild Project Aug 21 to 26. The fest, put on in association with the New York No Limits film series, features dozens of shorts and a handful of features that “explore and promote queer-themed issues, work by and featuring LGBTQ artists, as well as work inspired by the expanded innovative and audacious downtown Queer avant garde.”

While the programming features selections from across Europe and also from Indonesia and Australia, there’s a particular focus on local films, with some downtown and Brooklyn burlesque and cabaret stars in the mix. The Cruel Tale of the Medicine Man is a dark comedy directed by James Habacker, owner of the Slipper Room, and features some of the venue’s acts, including Habacker himself as Mr. Choade and Mat Fraser as Seal Boy. Artist Joe Coleman, a onetime East Village fixture, plays an evil “Medicine Man.”

Another B+B favorite, Gatorade-humper Erin Markey, stars in Junkie Doctors, a film about conjoined twins by Michael Cavadias, who has appeared on shows like Girls and Difficult People.

The fest’s Future Cult Classics category– the winner of which will receive the aforementioned Golden Raspberry– celebrates films in the spirit of directors like John Waters and Roger Corman, and Gang Girls 2000 definitely fits that bill. Directed by Katrina Del Mar, who’s been called the “lesbian Russ Meyer,” it was shot in “GlitterVision” on Kembra Pfahler’s Super 8mm and features performers like Pfahler and World Famous BOb in a series of Warriors-esque girl gangs.

You’ll also get a chance to see A David Lynch Movie, a short directed by Francine Daveta, in case you missed it when it screened at Francine the Lucid Dream’s Twin Peaks Burlesque night. The Lynch-inspired film features a music video by the show’s host, nerdcore rapper Schaffer the Darklord.
