Bedford Avenue has more than its share of coffee spots, starting with the El Beit reboot that opened in March. But this next one promises to be a little different. Equilibria, opening just down the block from Oslo and Black Brick, isn’t just a cafe offering free wifi– it doubles and triples as a pharmacy and wellness store.
The self-described “modern-day apothecary” is due to open this month, according to its website, which boasts that its pharmacists, rather than just pushing pills, “assess the larger picture, understanding our patients, the healing process, prevention, and life balance.”

Natural supplements and holistic care products are all well and good, but what is this place going to do to succeed on the notoriously expensive strip where Kings Pharmacy lost its battle against Duane Reade and Northside Pharmacy was replaced by a Dunkin’ Donuts?
“Of course,” the site says, “a modern apothecary-style pharmacy would brew the perfect coffee.” Yes, of course! So, expect “hand-dripped” pour-over and loose-leaf teas.
Actually, the place sounds a little like Stanley’s Pharmacy, on the Lower East Side, where in addition to filling a prescription and grabbing a cappuccino, you can pick up custom tea mixes designed to fight hangovers and PMS. A lovely idea, but call us when you’re dispensing the good stuff.
