After a good three years of sitting vacant, the storefront on the corner of Avenue A and East 5th Street is finally being put to use — somehow. Though the former pharmacy space had been seeking a dry tenant — with a “no restaurants” sign displayed in the window — we’re supposed to believe the landlord got desperate enough to welcome NYC’s “first bar that lets you drink for two,” per a Facebook page advertising, um, this place.

That page links to a Twitter feed and lists a phone number with a sultry-voiced outgoing message: “Thank you for calling Gestations, New York’s first bar for pregnant women. All you mothers-to-be should come check out our trimester specials and our 9-month happy hour, because now you’re drinking for two. Visit us on October 25 at 504 East Fifth Street before that water breaks.”

IMG_0477The message, like the sign, then invites folks to check the place out on the BarTrendr app — which makes it safe to assume this is just a marketing campaign. Gestations was posted to the app just a few hours ago. Other bars on the app include Hop Devil Grill, Doc Holliday’s, Off the Wagon, and Nevada Smiths. With that clientele in the mix, it’s no wonder someone has already left this comment on the Gestations entry: “What a perfect place to find women already on the perfect birth control.”

Assuming this is a stunt, we’ll give these guys credit — they went to the trouble of posting a public notice claiming that they’ve filed a liquor license application. Points for authenticity, but this won’t actually be funny until they pitch it to Community Board 3.
