OddFellows, the Williamsburg ice creamery, will not open its East Village location today as originally planned (they’re aiming for next Friday, May 9, with a small chance they’ll hold off until May 16). This morning B+B stopped by the new standing room-only shop on East 4th Street to see what work remains.
Co-owner Mohan Kumar said that new flooring will be put in, as well as a mirror against the back wall (which the menu will be written on), possibly a chalkboard, and definitely signage and an awning out front.
On Monday, the health department will hopefully sign off on the place, permitting Kumar, his wife Holiday, and chef Sam Mason to bring ice cream on to the premises.
According to Grub Street, Mason, formerly the pastry chef at wd~50, has already concocted some 116 flavors. At the Williamsburg flagship (which doubles as their production facility), Kumar said 12 to 14 flavors are available each day. In the East Village, customers will be able to choose from eight flavors, such as Chorizo Caramel Swirl, Tobacco Leaf Smoked Chili Huckleberry, Buttermilk Biscuit, Beet Pistachio Honey Goat Cheese, Coffee & Coffee Soil, Miso Butterscotch Cherry, and Sesame Kumquat Pumpernickel.
The walls have been painted to resemble a circus tent, and two shelves of whimsical knickknacks have been installed. On an exposed-brick wall, there’s a framed painting of Jesus holding an ice cream cone.
Clyde—their mascot, a deranged-looking monkey with cymbals—seems to be acclimating well to his new digs.
