An East Villager was struck and killed by an SUV near Astor Place today — the second critical collision off of Cooper Square in about as many days.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m. this morning, Lisa Julian, a 47-year-old resident of East Seventh Street, was crossing the intersection at Third Avenue and St. Marks Place when she was struck by a white Ford Explorer, police say.

The driver, a 58-year-old man, remained on the scene as Julian was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An investigation is ongoing.

This morning, officers spoke to a Citi Biker this morning near the scene of the accident.

The incident comes just a little over 24 hours after a man went to the hospital in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle a few blocks away, at East Fifth Street and Cooper Square.

Earlier this month, after a couple of other collisions in the neighborhood, we noted that politicians are lobbying for heightened traffic safety measures citywide.
