Avenue A has seen some kind of changeover in recent days: Odessa Bar closed, Thai import Somtum Der opened (and is serving “Beeraquirillas”), and now: fro-yo you can top with balsamic vinegars.

Jersey resident Jim Polidoro opened an outpost of his Cedar Grove shop, Twist, at 70 Avenue A last night. If you thought the East Village already had too many fro-yo shops (Twist is not to be confused with Twister, which opened in July), know it could be worse: Polidoro came here because the Jersey market was oversaturated — and because the EV “is bohemian and also there’s gentrification that’s happening, so there’s a mixture going on; there’s a diversity of people.”

The self-serve yogurt is organic and sweetened with fruit juice, and there’ll be a vegan variety on tap at all times. You can top it with all the usual crumbles, plus balsamic vinegar (in espresso, chocolate, and fig varieties) made by Olive That! in Montclair. The artwork also hails from Jersey: Polidoro commissioned a homeless Newark artist to do it, playing Warhol to his Basquiat.
