Twas just a little over a month ago that we marveled over the “honey toast” at St. Marks newcomer Iris Cafe — a sort of ice-cream-sundae toast castle that rivaled the cronut in its bonkers complexity (but not in its ability to draw pageviews, apparently. Oh well, we tried.)

Sadly, Iris Cafe seems to have closed for a “store remodeling,” according to a sign on the window that apologizes for the inconvenience.

Inconvenience? Where are we going to get that sweet, sweet honey toast? We’re having a serious “gotta have our Pops” moment here.

Luckily, it turns out Spot Dessert Bar has been serving “golden toast” all along, as its signboard makes clear. But could its version possibly be as epic as Iris Cafe’s “honey toast”? We stopped in with a video camera to check it out, and to have customers sell us on the toast cubes drizzled with honey and accompanied by condensed milk ice cream. One of them said she’d wait an hour for the stuff. So maybe this is the next cronut?
