Six years ago, Josefina Blanc, a former photography editor at Art & Commerce, found herself priced out of Bushwick when the rent on the 10,000 sq. ft. loft shot up from $2,500 to $8,000. Her husband, a performance artist now represented by a gallery in Chelsea, had spent years renovating the space with the understanding that, in exchange, the rent would remain stable, but efforts to appeal to their landlord were in vain. The couple decided to call it quits and moved to South Carolina that year.

Dagmara Dominczyk: Greenpoint Still Smells Like Sausage and Ciggies

“It still smells the same, oh my God — like sausage and cigarettes,” said Dagmara Dominczyk. After two years away from her neighborhood of nearly a decade, the actress had returned to Greenpoint to read from her new novel, “The Lullaby of Polish Girls.”

I first met Stefan Marolachakis in 2010 when he was tending bar at Heathers, just a few blocks away from his apartment overlooking Tompkins Square Park. He still lives there, but these days he’s writing for ESPN, Nylon, and The Fader, and drumming for Caveman, which just released its self-titled sophomore album via Fat Possum.

Bye Bye, Blarney Cove: An Irish Holdover Packs Up the Shillelagh

Sometime around 1977, Father Time ducked into the Blarney Cove on East 14th Street and never bothered to start the clock back up when he left. A gnarled shillelagh, or “Irish whuppin’ stick,” hangs on the wall beneath the television, which is typically tuned to baseball or horse races. There’s a working payphone and a video poker game by the tables in the rear. A faint odor of stale beer floats around.

Sadly, there are just a scant few days left to grab a cheap domestic draft at this sliver of old New York. The Cove will close its doors for good at the end of this month. It’s “going the way of Mars Bar and CBGB,” says bartender Lisa Ramsay.

Lil’ Nugs: 51-Year-Old Killed By G Train, $65 Brooklyn Brunch Tour

Every day at 4:20 p.m. we stuff your pipe with Lil’ Nugs, our late afternoon link dump.

Go Big or Go Home

Michael Pearce

A 51-year-old man was struck and killed by the G train around 8 p.m. last night as it pulled into the Broadway stop in Williamsburg. He’s the record-breaking 31st subway fatality of 2013. [Gothamist]

Crown Heights sandwich joint and cocktail bar Black Tree, which opened a LES location last month, uses the ol’ B+B tipline to tell us about their Sip & Slide-r Happy Hour. Stop by their Orchard Street shop between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to try the chef’s selection of three sliders for $9. Wash it down with $4 drafts of New York state craft beer or $6 glasses of Channing Daughters wine on tap. [Bedford + Bowery] More →

Think Cronuts Are a Big Deal? Look at This Ice-Cream-Sundae Toast Castle

Think Cronuts Are a Big Deal? Look at This Ice-Cream-Sundae Toast Castle

By now you know that cronuts, the biggest phenomenon in crossbreeding since ligers, have become a viral phenomenon to rival even our most venerated online institutions, like Ryan Gosling Vs. a Puppy, or Grumpy Cat.

As a fledgling web operation, Bedford + Bowery is in need of just such a morsel of clickbait, and since our “Game of Thrones” birthday cake doesn’t seem to have gone viral (yet!), we were more than a little excited to see that a new pastry shop had opened on St. Marks Place. Might the next cronut be right under our nose?

When David Yoo, a student at Parsons, and Mohan Kumar, a realtor and DJ, met at a party in the East Village in 2005, they had no idea that one of them would go on to own an ice cream parlor in the neighborhood while the other would open one in Williamsburg.

Secret Project Robot Opens a Happyfun Hideaway

The secret seems to be out about Secret Project Robot’s new sister establishment. “Yesterday, I made a batch of vegan pulled pork and it sold out in about three hours,” Rachel Nelson told Bedford + Bowery.

Happyfun Hideaway’s early success after just a few weeks in business seems to have come from a combination of word-of-mouth and a straight-up irresistible atmosphere (just look at our slideshow). The bar offers mixed drinks and reasonably priced beers, plus what the owners describe as a “slightly healthier version of Americana bar food” (so far, offerings have included jackfruit with barbecue sauce, mac and cheese, Frito pie and cheeseburgers).

If you’re in the habit of walking home alone while checking your Facebook feed with just one eye open, it might be time to wise up: police in Williamsburg and Greenpoint are on the lookout for a man who has robbed five area residents in the last two weeks as they returned from bars in the evening.

“He’s only been striking between 10:30 p.m. and 1 a.m.,” said Stefan Komar, captain of the 94th Precinct. “I don’t know why, but he has a schedule.”
