Bushwick Artists: Maybe We Should All Just Buy a Building Together?

Six years ago, Josefina Blanc, a former photography editor at Art & Commerce, found herself priced out of Bushwick when the rent on the 10,000 sq. ft. loft shot up from $2,500 to $8,000. Her husband, a performance artist now represented by a gallery in Chelsea, had spent years renovating the space with the understanding that, in exchange, the rent would remain stable, but efforts to appeal to their landlord were in vain. The couple decided to call it quits and moved to South Carolina that year.

Bye Bye, Blarney Cove: An Irish Holdover Packs Up the Shillelagh

Sometime around 1977, Father Time ducked into the Blarney Cove on East 14th Street and never bothered to start the clock back up when he left. A gnarled shillelagh, or “Irish whuppin’ stick,” hangs on the wall beneath the television, which is typically tuned to baseball or horse races. There’s a working payphone and a video poker game by the tables in the rear. A faint odor of stale beer floats around.

Sadly, there are just a scant few days left to grab a cheap domestic draft at this sliver of old New York. The Cove will close its doors for good at the end of this month. It’s “going the way of Mars Bar and CBGB,” says bartender Lisa Ramsay.

Secret Project Robot Opens a Happyfun Hideaway

The secret seems to be out about Secret Project Robot’s new sister establishment. “Yesterday, I made a batch of vegan pulled pork and it sold out in about three hours,” Rachel Nelson told Bedford + Bowery.

Happyfun Hideaway’s early success after just a few weeks in business seems to have come from a combination of word-of-mouth and a straight-up irresistible atmosphere (just look at our slideshow). The bar offers mixed drinks and reasonably priced beers, plus what the owners describe as a “slightly healthier version of Americana bar food” (so far, offerings have included jackfruit with barbecue sauce, mac and cheese, Frito pie and cheeseburgers).

Police: Brooklyn Bargoers Are Getting Attacked and Robbed On Their Way Home

If you’re in the habit of walking home alone while checking your Facebook feed with just one eye open, it might be time to wise up: police in Williamsburg and Greenpoint are on the lookout for a man who has robbed five area residents in the last two weeks as they returned from bars in the evening.

“He’s only been striking between 10:30 p.m. and 1 a.m.,” said Stefan Komar, captain of the 94th Precinct. “I don’t know why, but he has a schedule.”

Car Jumps Curb and Plows Through Bodega Flower Stand, Injuring Eight

A car hopped the curb in the East Village this morning, mowing down everything in its path and sending 8 people to the hospital, according to the fire department.

“It was a scene out of a movie,” said Rafael, a witness who didn’t want his last name used.
