Spreading the word of God has been extremely lucrative for Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), the world’s largest Christian broadcasting company. The organization’s late founders, evangelical power couple Paul and Jan Crouch, were renowned for extravagant lifestyles notably lacking in Christian asceticism or self-denial – his-and-hers mega-mansions in Newport Beach, chauffeured Bentleys, and $57 million in private jets. Jan maintained an air-conditioned trailer just for her snow-white Maltese dogs.
We’re gonna go ahead and guess it’s probably been a while since you’ve visited a church (unless you were enticed by the Jesus karaoke at that new “hipster” Bushwick church, that is). But tomorrow night Lucy Cottrell and Catherine Cohen will make it worth your while. The comedian-artists are hosting a New Age-like ritual (otherwise known as a comedy show) at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah in Greenpoint.
“Are there any white people here?” Atheer Yacoub asked the audience last night at The Experiment Comedy Gallery. “Can I hide behind you until this election is over?”
Yacoub played host for Hilarious Muslims: a Patriotic Stand-Up Show, the second all-Muslim comedy showcase at Williamsburg’s newest DIY comedy venue, which caught a wave of viral attention recently when owner Mo Fathelbab introduced the “Donald Trump Special” last Friday.
Leo Fitzpatrick, the Lower East Side actor who played a street kid in Kids and, hilariously, a street adult in the Broad City finale, just created a pin that’ll strike a chord with anyone who saw the terrifying documentary Among the Believers at Tribeca Film Festival this week (or, for that matter, anyone who’s read the news lately). The “NO GODS, NO WARS” pin, a collaboration with Sin Amor, is one in a series of five that are now going for $20 each at The Gift Shop. The art-object store was launched last month by Alldayeveryday (who did The Newsstand at the Lorimer stop) in conjunction with Red Bull Studios, where it’s located.
What’s hot pink, “naked” and raw-nchy? Why, the new bricks-and-mortar Brooklyn location of juice mecca The Squeeze, of course. The food-truck enterprise is now cold-pressing a veritable cornucopia of fresh produce at 195 Graham Ave in Williamsburg, and packaging the pure nectar with labels like “Get your juices flowing,” “I have a heart-on,” and “the jeans I wore in high school.” What with the suggestive monikers, the trademark screaming pink, and the nubile juice-covered flesh on display on The Squeeze’s website, the last thing browsers might expect to hear is the voice of God.
