A Look Inside Paulaner, the New Beer Hall From Edi & the Wolf’s Wolfgang Ban

There’s been quite a lot of retooling among the Bowery’s high-profile restaurants: Pulino’s closed to become Cherche Midi, Peels closed to make way for Bar Primi, Bowery Diner closed to become “a very different restaurant,” and, back in April, Paulaner Brauhaus suddenly shuttered. It reopened a few days ago as just plain Paulaner, pitching itself as less of a brauhaus and more of a “Modern Bavarian Restaurant and Brewery,” though master brewer Andreas Heidenreich is still crafting rotating brews in its copper and steel tanks.

Bar Primi Has Primed Its Primo Neon

Lookin’ good! Bar Primi, the casual pasta spot that Andrew Carmellini is bringing to the old Peels space just got some neon signage, and it was all lit up last night. Last we heard, the restaurant was aiming to open next month.

Also last night: Tom Rinaldi — author of the New York Neon and blog — led a tour of the East Village and Lower East Side’s neon signs. Check out designer Jay Boucher’s Vine, below, for a glimpse of what ya missed.

Peels Has Closed, and Its Ketchup Will Be Missed

Some loved their biscuits, others hated their unholy wait times but many took to Twitter upon discovering that Peels has unceremoniously closed. For starters, Claire Lobenfeld (@clairevlo) tweeted, “You served the only ketchup that didn’t trigger my mortuusequusphobia” (yes, there’s a word for fear of ketchup). We’ve gone ahead and rounded up some of the most extreme reactions to the loss of this Bowery brunch spot.
