For the last couple months, the free Monday night show Broken Comedy – in the dark and dingy back room at Bar Matchless in Greenpoint – has really been hitting its stride. Lately in particular, Broken has drawn solid crowds with consistently strong talent. That’s impressive as the show (which was created in 2011) has been re-upping with the absence of favored host Michael Che.

On Monday night, Broken Comedy celebrated co-founder Michael Che’s 31st birthday with a full-on blowout. Inside an extremely packed backroom at Matchless in Greenpoint, Che hosted the night alongside co-founder and regular host Nimesh Patel.

Chris Rock’s new film is shooting in the East Village tonight.
According to signs posted around the neighborhood, the “untitled Chris Rock movie,” produced by Scott Rudin and written and directed by Rock, is about “one-time stand-up Andre Allen, who has abandoned comedy — and the funny movies that make him famous — for more serious fare. But over the course of one day in New York, everything he thought he knew about his life gets overturned.”

Not a day after dropping his new special on Comedy Central, Hannibal Buress celebrated his 31st birthday at the Knitting Factory last night. Sure, his actual birthday was last month — but whatever, it was an excuse to bring his weekly front-bar showcase into the Knit’s spacious back room for a proper rager promising a “VERY special” musical guest.
