The Sinner’s Kit Kat Cabaret
Thursday, July 19 at Bizarre Bushwick, 10 pm: $10 suggested donation

Even though your parents probably told you otherwise, it can be fun to sin. Someone who knows that well is Vic Sin, a dance, drag, and burlesque performer who produces The Sinner’s Kit Kat Cabaret every month at Bizarre, which is hosted by drag performer (and leader of the inimitable queer drag and burlesque collective Beefsquad) Lee VaLone. It also happens to be Lee’s birthday, so you know the show will be extra special. Helping celebrate (and sin) will be the stacked lineup of C’Etait BonTemps, Angelica Sundae, Devo Monique, Dynasty, Laé D. Boi, Mini Horrorwitz, Nyx Nocturne, and Theydy Bedbug. More →

Joe’s Pub Block Party returns to Astor Place this Thursday afternoon. It touts a pretty incredible lineup of immigrants and performers of color, featuring the mambo and North African beats of the Yemen Blues Duo and the classically-trained voice of Treya Lam, among others.  This event is part of Make Music New York, which “energizes the shared social spaces that make NYC a cultural capital” through city-wide music festivals on the summer solstice, per their website. More details on this year’s block party here.

Jad Abumrad of Radiolab Gets His Black Sabbath Fix at Splitty

(Photo: Nina Westervelt)

Jad Abumrad is a genius. Really. In 2011, he received the ridiculously prestigious MacArthur Genius Award for creating “engaging audio explorations of scientific and philosophical questions” on his nationally syndicated WNYC show Radiolab, which he co-hosts with veteran broadcaster Robert Krulwich. When you listen to Jad talk on Radiolab or face-to-face at his favorite Brooklyn bar Splitty, it truly feels like you’re in the presence of a genius. He uses the word “quantum” way too casually and convincingly. And he drinks bourbon neat, which is definitely a genius-style drink.

Allison Kave and Keavy Landreth on Girls: ‘I’m Writhing With Discomfort’

Welcome to Girls Talk, in which two of our favorite New Yorkers share the text messages they sent during this week’s episode of Girls.

A lot happened in the Girls universe recently: Lena Dunham hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend and announced the pub date for her book, Adam Driver was reportedly cast as the next Star Wars foe, Allison Williams got engaged, and Jemima Kirke has a four-page photo spread in the current issue of New York. Because Hannah spent most of the last episode with family, it feels like it’s been a while since we’ve seen the gang.

AllisonSelfieThe text in gray belongs to Clinton Hill’s Allison Kave, founder of First Prize Pies. Tomorrow night at Nitehawk Cinema is the release party for her first cookbook, First Prize Pies: Shoo-Fly, Candy Apple, and Other Deliciously Inventive Pies for Every Week of the Year (and More).

KeavySelfieThe text in blue belongs to Kumquat Cupcakery founder Keavy Landreth, who lives in Crown Heights. That’s where she and Kave will open Butter & Scotch — “Brooklyn’s first dessert and cocktail bar” — this summer. Until then, you can purchase their treats at Smorgasburg and stores citywide.

While it seems like every business on the planet is trying to lock up a lease in Williamsburg, Nightwood is walking away from theirs. At the end of the month, the furniture and textile shop will relocate from 111 Grand Street to a commercial building in Clinton Hill. It’ll be replaced by Sharktooth, a purveyor of vintage rugs and bedding that’s upgrading to the larger storefront from its address on Atlantic Avenue.

Watch Eli Reed Clear a Cop Car in a True ‘Skate or Die’ Moment

After dropping a sought-after collab with Mark Gonzales this spring, New York City brand UXA continues to push creativity with a new video titled “#TheChase.” Starting at the Astor Place cube, downtown’s most famous meet-up spot, the grainy black-and-white mini-movie follows pro skater Eli Reed as he slashes through lower Manhattan, trailed by some very large thugs played by Lower East Side natives Carlito Olivo and Johnny Diaz.
