Tis the season for Lovecraft festivals and flesh-suspension ziplines, but aside from all that, we’re pretty much living in an age of horror. I mean, Stephen King just compared an actual presidential candidate to cthulhu. So, why not have more than one horror film festival? The first Brooklyn Horror Film Festival was announced earlier this month and will take place in mid-October. Now it’s getting a downtown counterpart, FEARnyc, which will bring 65+ horror flicks to Cinema Village from October 21 to 27. And here’s something The Wolfpack will be psyched about: Wes Craven’s widow will appear on his behalf during the awards ceremony.
Every movie worth seeing this week is heavy on the secrecy, mystery, and intrigue. So swoop in and revel in the darkness.
Deadman
Here’s your chance to see Jim Jarmusch’s brooding black-and-white Acid Western on the big screen. Neil Young apparently wrote the soundtrack for this film in one sitting. Jarmusch scooped up pre-Tim-Burton Johnny Depp for the lead role in this one. Iggy Pop also makes an appearance. This Friday through Sunday, the Coney Island Film Festival celebrates its 13th year with 88 films, some food, some wine, and, of course, some burlesque. Programs include “Coney Island Films,” which are films based in or about Coney Island; “The Jules Verne Project,” a story about a shipwreck and survival; and of course “The Warriors,” which needs no explanation.
