One Structure To Sustain You, Selena Lives On, And More Art Openings

A Structure For Hope And Survival
Opening Tuesday, June 6 at Cooler Gallery, 7 pm to 10 pm. On view through June 30.

Artist Huy Bui has a penchant for constructing environments, and his latest creation to be brought to life at Navy Yard-adjacent art space Cooler Gallery is timely in its name: A Structure For Hope and Survival. Deemed a “framework of organizing artifacts, objects, art, tools, books, games, supplies, seeds, plants and provisions,” this “modular ecological unit” serves as a structure and container for anything you might need, from plants and seating areas to how-to books and emergency snacks. An artist statement indicates that a manual is in the works for anyone who might want to build one themselves. The opening reception on Tuesday will begin with a panel discussion entitled “Art and Architecture in the Anthropocene” with Bui, fellow artists, and people who have worked on projects like Playlab and the Lowline.

Female Behavior
Opening Tuesday January 10 at Cooler Gallery, 7 pm to 10 pm. On view through January 31.

Firstly, let’s discuss this gallery’s name. Sure, it sounds sort of pompous, in a cooler-than-you kind of way, and maybe that’s what they think of themselves. But the origin of this gallery is actually, well, cool. It exists within a “repurposed industrial icebox” in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, so it really is a cooler gallery. Plus, it seeks to display work that involves elements of manufacturing, so it’s aware of its roots. But enough about the gallery, let’s get to the show: artist Kate Hush makes massive sculptures of neon light, and what she is particularly trying to capture in her solo show, Female Behavior, are women and their so-called “wicked ways.” She writes of light being produced when bonds are broken, such as the cutting of a diamond, so she has crafted female silhouettes to portray those who are seen as cruel and conniving simply for being “sharp” or for cutting ties with a man who will then call her crazy. May women burn bright and powerful as much as they can, especially now.

With a solid lead and only a few contests left before the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia next month, Hillary Clinton is this close to having the primaries all sewn up. Tomorrow night’s California primary could be the end of a long, drawn-out race that has brought us Bill Clinton and the Wailers, Bernie muppets, and many a Rosario cameo. In preparation for that very important moment/fulfillment of political destiny, Clinton will be holding a rally in Brooklyn that promises to be the most anxiety-ridden event in all the five boroughs. The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Duggal Greenhouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard—the same spot where Clinton and Bernie Sanders debated in April—and is scheduled to last until about 10:30 p.m.: about 30 minutes before the California polls close.

Brooklyn Brewery today announced plans to roll out their barrel program to the Brooklyn Navy Yard in a big way. The Williamsburg-based beer operation already has a warehouse at the yard where they’re aging 2,000 barrels of wine, bourbon, rum and mezcal by way of experimental processes. But come 2018, the company will open their new “primary headquarters” to the public inside Building 77 at the center of the yard, where they plan to produce 50,000 barrels of beer annually.

Jeff Koons and Lady Gaga Teamed Up For an ArtRave at the Navy Yard

While you were sleeping last night, Lady Gaga and Jeff Koons were throwing an “artRave” involving an eight-foot-tall sculpture of naked Gaga modeled after the cover of her new album ARTPOP. Boats were involved, people were excited.

We left midtown and headed down the East River to an undisclosed location later revealed to be the Brooklyn Navy Yards. By the time we docked (and filed out at an excruciating pace) we were steeped in complimentary cider and gender-indifferent eyeliner.
