You couldn’t help but guffaw when it was announced that uber-hip media empire Vice was planning to launch a food court in New Jersey, but this one’s for the New Yorkers. And, ok, all the European tourists who flood Williamsburg. Smorgasburg just announced that it’s teaming with Vice to open a winter night market inside of Villain, the media company’s event space at 307 Kent Avenue. It’ll be one of two new indoor markets Smorg launches this season.
The details are laid out in an email sent by Smorgasburg co-founder Eric Demby today. The night market will occur every Friday, Nov. 2 through December, 6pm till late, and will feature 15 food vendors and Vice-curated DJs. Here’s the rundown of confirmed vendors:
Smorgasburg favorites Carnal (launching a new winter concept), Home Frite (Belgian fries), Mao’s Bao (including panda-sesame dessert bao), John’s Juice (fruit drinks served inside the fruit, at the bar), meat-and-fire experts Carnal, an Oyster Party raw bar, Kokus (cultured coconut soft-serve), and Bona Bona Ice Cream (marshmallow-meringue-topped homemade ice cream)…. The night market will also welcome a few new faces: Sandoz, the Japanese “katsu sando” pork-cutlet-sandwich vendor from East Village restaurant The Izakaya—which will also feature their innovative pour-over miso soup; Sons of Thunder, New York City’s first poke restaurant—featuring never-frozen fish—serving poke bowls and fish tacos; and El Perrito Street Dogs, a stand highlighting traditional Latin and South American hot dog toppings (e.g., the “Colombiana,” with cabbage slaw, cilantro crema, pineapple sauce, salsa rosada, crushed potato chips and a quail egg).
And DJs:
Aquarium Drunkard’s Justin Gage (Dec. 14); The Juan MacLean (Nov. 23), Brunch Bounce Takeover (Nov. 30); Love Injection (Nov. 16); Susan Z. Anthony (Nowadays/Mister Sunday, Nov. 9); and Academy Records DJs Ron Like Hell and DJ Fantasy Man (Nov. 2).
The Smorgasburg x Vice Night Market fills a hole that was created when the Brooklyn Night Bazaar left its original location in 2015. The Bazaar reopened elsewhere in Greenpoint in 2016 but without the multitude of food vendors.
In addition to the night market, Smorg will open a daytime weekend market at 625 Atlantic Ave., across from the Barclays Center in Fort Greene. It’ll feature 25 food vendors, 25 Brooklyn Flea vendors, and a bocce court. The market runs Nov. 3 through March 31 and will be open 11am to 8pm on Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays. Vendors include Ramen Burger, Oyster Party, a new pho concept from Rooster Boy, Thaibird, Noodle Lane, Mutz, The Pizza Cupcake, and The Stand.
