When Ben & Jerry’s left the East Village in 2010 after 22 years on Third Avenue, even the normally chain-averse Jeremiah’s Vanishing NY acknowledged its “odd appeal,” and NYU students no doubt mourned the loss of Free Cone Day.
Well, rejoice, Chubby Hubby lovers. A B&J’s scoop shop is opening right in the heart of St. Marks Place, between Second and Third Avenues. Signage just went up at 24 St. Marks, formerly home to Pinkberry and, briefly, a location of the Caffe Bene chain. Given all the wacky ice cream options that have recently come to the neighborhood, is this a return to normcore?
The storefront is currently being revamped and those working inside today didn’t know when the shop would open. In the meantime, you can find Ben & Jerry’s in, oh, just about every bodega in the neighborhood.
