Il Laboratorio del Gelato is joining recently opened locations of Luke’s Lobster and Sweetgreen on University Place.
Opened in 2002 by the former owner of Ciao Bella, Il Laboratorio was an early entrant in the artisan ice cream craze. However, while it has remained popular on restaurant menus and its pints can be found at the bougier bodegas, the beloved brand hasn’t multiplied its storefronts in the manner of, say, Van Leeuwen, which earlier this month opened a Lower East Side location just down the block from Il Laboratorio’s Ludlow Street flagship. Which is why it’s somewhat of a surprise to hear that Il Laboratorio is opening an outpost at 56 University Place, at East 10th Street.
According to the press release, the Greenwich Village location will feature a “rotating selection of 48 flavors plus sundaes, cakes, and milkshakes; pints and ‘party size’ containers will be ready for take away; and new elements too, like ice cream sandwiches and a new signature sundae.”
The opening is set for December, just in time for eggnog gelato.
