Equilibria, the pharmacy, wellness store and cafe that had planned to open on Bedford Avenue back in May, is finally up and slinging espresso as well as even stronger anti-depressants.

The “modern-day apothecary” was opened by Vinnie Dam and Joon Kim. They’re both pharmacists, but by the looks of their sleek, stylish storefront they aren’t exactly pharma bros. Having worked for big chains in the past, they’re now hoping to cater to customers in a more tailored fashion. And no, that doesn’t mean recommending a trip to Pumps for those who suffer from impotence. Rather, Equilibria has an on-site compounding lab that allows pharmacists to create custom versions of medications based on a patient’s individual needs. If you’re allergic to a certain ingredient in a packaged version of hydrocortisone cream, for instance, the pharmacists can create a custom blend that ditches the offending element. Or if your gramps always forgets that he has to take two types of pills instead of one, the folks at Equilibria can blend the two together for his swallowing pleasure.

The compounding lab is right in the store– sort of like an open kitchen– so you can keep an eye on what’s going into your tube. And by the way, you can also get pills made for your pets. “We’re trying to help everyone in the family, not just the humans,” Dam told us.

Just don’t tell your pharmacist to add some Stevia– you’ll have to save that for the barista who’s in another corner churning out private-blend coffee. If you’re wondering what a coffee counter is doing in a pharmacy, Dam notes that caffeine has its own medicinal value: it can increase blood flow and even open up one’s airways during an emergency. Add to which, the store offers loose-leaf tea blends. Its “Balance” blend, for mood stabilization, incorporates St. John’s wort, eucalyptus, ginseng, and ginger. Its “Inhale” blend also incorporates eucalyptus, to help with breathing.

To top it off, Equilibria also offers natural supplements and holistic care products. Just in case that mate soda isn’t doing the trick.
