Sadly, the urban beach that the owners of Rockaway Brewing Company had planned to open near the border of Ridgewood and Bushwick ain’t happening. Some very vocal neighbors just weren’t having it. But the good news is this: the brewery’s founders, Marcus Burnett and Ethan Long, have succeeded in getting their tap room up and running in Rockaway Beach.

As we reported back in April, the craft beer company, hatched out of the owners’ Far Rockaway bungalows but currently brewing in Long Island City, will eventually start production inside of a 3,600-square-foot building on Beach 72nd Street.
In the meantime, the beer bunker is serving up new varieties of the brews you’ve come to know and love from slurping them over at the boardwalk concession stands.
When we stopped into the garage-like space on Sunday, Kool & the Gang was spinning on the record player.
The taps, meanwhile, were loaded up with the beers on the menu below.
Food is still in the works, but the brewery has been talking to its neighbor Goody’s, an excellent West Indian takeout joint, about teaming up. Jerk chicken and a shandy at one of the tap room’s outdoor picnic tables sounds like a pretty swell apres-plage plan to us.
Rockaway Brewing Company, 415 Beach 72nd St., nr. Amstel Blvd., Arverne; open Mon to Thurs, 3pm to 10pm, Fri to Sun, noon to 10 pm.
