What’s going on at 101 Greene Street? You may recognize the above scene as the work of Mark Alan Stamaty, whose frenetic renderings of NYC have graced the pages of the Village Voice (olds may remember his late-’70s Village-set comic, “McDoodle Street”), the cover of the first They Might Be Giants album, and more recently the cover of Will Hermes’s excellent account of the ’70s music scene, Love Goes to Buildings on Fire.
Stamaty’s latest, depicting stores like High End Boutique and Some Shoppe along with the sort of loft-dwelling musicians we hope still live in Soho, is plastered over what we’re told today will be the first retail shop of Sonos, the wireless speaker manufacturer.
Last year, the Santa Barbara-based brand did a pop-up at NeueHouse that involved a New York-inspired audiovisual installation powered by Sonos speakers, music from Wolf and Lamb, and drop-ins from the likes of Dev Hynes, Best Coast, and Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire. We’re told by a rep that some “really cool things” will be going down at the retail shop as well. If nothing else, the Bose store on Broadway will get some competition when Sonos opens next year.
