OddFellows chef Sam Mason is known for coming up with some pretty wacky stuff (see: cotton-candy cone), but when a photo of Calvin Klein Eternity ice cream popped up today on Twitter we were a little taken aback. Fortunately, we discovered you needn’t ingest, smell, or smell like the perfume in order to enjoy the shop’s CK flavors. Mason, formerly of WD~50, used his considerable experience and real old-fashioned flavors to replicate the notes found in the fragrances.
OddFellows co-owner Mohan Kumar told us if you want to try a CK Eternity-inspired flavor, you’ll have to get to the East Village location quick – there’s only a little left of the very last batch of CK Eternity Now For Men (cedar scented vanilla with candied ginger and candied grapefruit). If you can’t make it in time, you’ll be able to try a new version of the flavor (the vanilla/cedar base without the candied ginger and grapefruit) later this fall. The Eternity Now For Women-inspired concoction, peach blossom scented lychee and quince, is sadly no more but did so well they’re bringing it back next summer.
OddFellows was approached by Calvin Klein and Bon Appétit magazine to make two Eternity flavors for Fashion Week, and it was sold in OddFellows’ two locations all last week. The process was “pretty straightforward,” said Kumar. Mason smelled a sample of the perfumes, took a look at the list of the fragrance notes in each one, and went about working his magic. The men’s flavor is “musty and masculine,” Kumar said. The cedar flavor is achieved by soaking cedar chips in the milk and cream. The women’s flavor is more feminine and floral. “It worked out amazing,” he said. “They sold really, really fast.”
