With nesting season officially upon us (triple ugh), the opening of a new home design store in Greenpoint couldn’t be better timed. On Sunday, the husband and wife behind Franklin Street clothing boutique Wolves Within will open a sister store just a few doors down – namely, the first permanent location of Home of the Brave, the home-furnishings pop-up they operated on West Street for a few months earlier this year.
Bethany and Max Vogel opened Wolves Within in 2011. After customers kept complimenting them on the store’s custom fixtures, they decided to get into the homewares business. At Home of the Brave, you’ll find creations by “independent makers and designers and artisans from both local and abroad,” per Bethany, who was standing on a ladder getting ready for Sunday’s opening when we spoke to her on the phone today.
Like its pop-up store, the permanent location of Home of the Brave will stock handmade blankets, towels, tabletop items, and lighting fixtures made by a former Greenpoint resident as well as by artisans from Denmark and California. But it’ll be more than just a hipster Crate & Barrel — both Max and Bethany are designers themselves (Matt has worked with design studios, Bethany with fashion brands), so they’re collaborating with Greenpoint’s own Small Spells to make custom ceramics, and they’re designing the exclusive patterns and colors of many of the rugs they sell.
All of which should bring still more tourists and Manhattanites to the Franklin Street strip. “The amount of people that had come to us from Manhattan and had never been in Greenpoint before was really rewarding,” Bethany said of the West Street pop-up. “In terms of Franklin, we’re so proud to be part of all these independent shops.”
Home of the Brave, 146 Franklin St., nr. Greenpoint Ave., Greenpoint; open Sun. from noon to 6:30pm, Mon. and Wed-Sat till 8pm, closed Tues.
