1With a scratchy image of the late Darby Crash staring through a crowd, surrounded by torn images of other punk icons, the cover of Glen E. Friedman’s one and only photozine My Rules is an actual collage of his prolific career. Rizzoli has released a robust book version of the 1982 self-published zine, featuring commentary and unseen images. And to celebrate, powerHouse Arena in Dumbo will be hosting an event tomorrow packed with other notables from the punk and skate world.

When three of the most important subcultures in America emerged, Friedman was there capturing the emotion, chaos, and attitude of punk, skateboarding, and rap’s pioneers. But Friedman was more than just a lucky witness with a camera, he was embedded in punk and skateboarding when they were joined at the hip and evolving by the second. Anyone could have clicked away and gotten HR, Jay Adams, or Jello Biafra on film, but Friedman was able to capture their essence and his images define the salad days of American hardcore, pool skating, and hip-hop.

1So what should you expect at a book launch for a straight-edge vegan photographer, who once published a book titled The Idealist? It certainly won’t be a passive event, where people queue up for a signing, while sipping cheap wine. In fact, it’s tough to predict what will really happen as Friedman participates in a live interview at the Arena with Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up, Chain and the Gang, and host of VICE’s Soft Focus). Svenonius is known for asking the least obvious questions and steering the conversation into ruminations on Communism and pretty much anywhere his brain fires off to.

They’ll also be auctioning off a Dogtown deck autographed and donated by founder Jim Muir (brother of Mike Muir of Suicidal Tendencies), and there’ll be vegan food from Cinnamon Snail. Oh wait, you also might get a chance to try a Superiority Burger, as Brooks Headley will be serving food, too.

Here’s a short video of Friedman and Ian MacKaye flipping through the book, which will also be played at Friedman’s one and only East Coast event.

“Book Launch: My Rules,” Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Powerhouse Arena, 37 Main St. at Water St., Dumbo
