Dozens of Kombi crazies and Beetlemaniacs circled up on Governor’s Island yesterday for the annual VW Traffic Jam. At least one hippie bus traveled all the way from Yellowstone for the annual car show, so you bet your sweet gazebo we were going to check it out.
The event wasn’t hard to find. All we had to do was follow this little fella as he sputtered across Delancey and down to the ferry terminal:
Truth be told, we’re not sure who won the audience-judged event (we weren’t in reporter mode, though we’re happy to report that Guv’s Isle has a lovely beer garden that serves oysters and frozen margs). But this guy was pretty badass:
And this Mr. Potato Head was definitely the best interior amenity.
Shortly after 4 p.m. all the VW owners started smoking grass — and by that we mean they revved up their engines on the lawn and headed for the return ferry. It was a fine spectacle, so we filmed it for your viewing enjoyment.
