Not only is The Vintage Twin once again popping up at 355A Bowery tomorrow through Wednesday, but next month the space will get a titillating new tenant: Black Boy Place, the Parisian street-wear brand responsible for Jay-Z’s notorious “Tom Ford” football jerz, will make its NYC brick-and-mortar debut there from August 4 to 18.
Okay, we know what you’re thinking: what. is up. with that name. “Unlike what some might think,” explains the fashion house on its website, “Black Boy Place refers to the dark side of men rather than the color of their skin.”
That said, its latest collection, “Black Excellence,” pays tribute to Michael Jordan, Barack Obama, and Kanye, as well as Jay-Z and Beyonce, both of whom have worn BBP. (You may recall that Jay-Z sported a football jersey based on his line “I don’t pop molly, I rock Tom Ford” — only to see Tom Ford himself knock off the design.)
Also featured on BBP’s website is a “PERVERT 69” jersey (a cheaper knockoff of Givenchy’s awful “PERVERT 17” shirt), a t-shirt with a bunch of designers’ names that looks like something Swagg Man would wear, and an extra-long Jean-Michel Basquiat shirt that features the artist’s name plastered across the butt area. (Oh, you didn’t know JEAN-MICHEL is the new JUICY?).
So head down to 355A Bowery (the opening party will be August 5), buy a Basquiat beanie, and then walk across the street to his old loft at 57 Great Jones, where he died, to watch him roll over in his grave.
