The Beets are not dead, says frontman Juan Wauters; they’re just focusing on something new. For one thing, Wauters’s solo LP, North American Poetry (N.A.P), came out last week via Greenpoint label Captured Tracks. He wrote and performed all of the songs on the new record, with some minimal vocal and instrumental help from friends.

To promote the record, Wauters is hosting a release party at Baby’s All Right this Sunday, and then touring with fellow Captured Tracks signee Mac DeMarco. They’ll hit Webster Hall on April 9 and then Wauters will open for the Vivian Girls at their sold-out farewell show at Death By Audio on March 1. If you’re heading down to Austin for SXSW, expect to see him there as well.

Wauters met up with us in a van under the BQE to perform “Continue To Be You” from the new record. He brought along Matthew Volz to execute the lighting. Check out more of Volz’s work by picking up a special edition of the LP featuring drawings and a comic by the Queens artist.
