Get excited, Astor Place lunch-hour zombies (we’re looking in the mirror here) — there’s a new chow spot in town. Archie & Sons, the throwback luncheonette-style diner we told you about last month, opened its doors in the East Village today.
The infant eatery (just six hours old when we snapped these photos) offers breakfast and lunch standards daily — from eggs and French toast to grilled cheese and BLTs — but really ups the ante with fresh and simple salads — like tuna, chicken & peas, or shrimp — served on a sandwich or breadless and tossed with lettuce, cucumber, tomato and onion.
“Everything is made fresh daily, and from scratch — no cans or boxes,” said owner Howie “Archie” Cohen, lounging on a stool behind the register during his first East Village lunch rush. “That’s why we have the menu the way we have it — we specialize in the things we do.”
So, nothing fancy — but in the age of the ramen burger, this kind of straightforwardness is as refreshing as an old-fashioned egg cream. Look out, Gem Spa.
