Market Hotel did a remarkable job of capturing our attention with that Sleater-Kinney show. It’s almost as if the place is run by someone who knows a thing or two about putting on a great show. Huh. But since the Liquor Man and his cohort of party poopers (er, the State Liquor Authority) had only granted a temporary license for the soft opening, we were starting to get a real bad case of nervous dry mouth at the thought that perhaps we’d be waiting a long time for the Bushwick DIY venue to officially throw open its doors at Broadway-Myrtle. After all, we’d waited about half a decade already…

And then finally, word from Market Hotel via Facebook quickly spread like fire ‘cross the interwebs:

After 5 years of hard work, we just got word that Market Hotel is finally able to reopen for regular shows at the end of this month! It’s been a humbling and inspiring experience to stick with getting this project through many twists and turns – and pull it off after so much sustained effort.

Along with a host of sick shows leading up to May 5, there’ll be an opening celebration Saturday, January 22, featuring our pal Dreamcrusher (told you they were killing it) as well as a full, legit bar. And bless Todd P and friends for declaring that tickets can be scooped up at-the-door only, which is good news for those of us with buying-tickets-in-advance related anxiety. (It’s a real disease, guys, and a pain in the ass for your trigger happy friends who, wisely, immediately bought up tickets to Mykki Blanco on May 5 and Faust on March 30.)

Judging by how long it took to get this thing chugging again, it’s safe to assume that (as with Trans-Pecos), Todd P and his crew wanted to do this one by the book, no matter how painfully slow. And if the new digs weren’t indication enough these guys were up to code, just take a look at that sparkling goddamn toilet— you can practically smell the scrubbing bubbles from here!

But even if we’ve traded that raw-as-hell grungy charm of the Old Market Hotel for a space that even the Liquor Lackeys could love, the renovated space still has vestiges of DIY. And hey, just because they’ve gone straight in the eyes of the State, doesn’t mean Market Hotel has traded in all of its DIY chops, of course. Most obviously, there are those beloved pillars that refuse to stop being structurally imperative just coz some fancy music critics feel their lanky bodies are in the way of a perfect show. (Follow the most vocal of the bunch at @MarketPillar.)

Our response to all that hullabaloo: whatever. Those pillars are there to help us have a good time, not hurt us. As @MarketPillar announced along with news that Market Hotel would open for good: “I’m now taking reservations for leaning-on-me privileges. Get in early or else you’ll have to lean on Back Pillar.”

Better advice was never spoke– “get in early” indeed.

Stay tuned for more incredible shows coming down the pipeline, but check out who’s been confirmed so far.
