Modo Yoga NYC’s new Williamsburg location is a carefully curated space crowned with living greenery and sleek white air purifiers silently expelling their vapors. There are cubbies made from repurposed wood from a mushroom factory, and guests can sip complimentary fragrant tea from white porcelain cups while browsing the studio’s selection of yoga clothes, kombucha flavors, and loose-leaf teas. Presiding over this little slice of sustainable Yogi heaven is co-founder Sarah Neufeld, a musician and violinist for Arcade Fire.

Hot on the heels of the opening of Devi, Williamsburg’s Grand Street strip is getting another yoga studio. Teacher training has already begun at Jared McCann’s Lighthouse Yoga School at 202 Grand. By February, a newly minted fleet of “McCann yogis” should be prepared to help sculpt your body into sinewy, pretzel-ish shapes. (Meaning you can put off that New Year’s resolution for another month.)

McCann, once profiled in The New York Times as a bad boy turned expert yogi, has a specific style of sequences representing a hodgepodge of influences, evidence of his background training in Ashtanga, Iyengar, Bikram, Dharma, and Forrest yoga.

She flashed a big grin as she got her first lesson in AcroYoga (acrobatics + yoga).

Williamsburg’s newest yoga studio wants to bring out the goddess in you. When Devi Yoga Studio opens Nov. 11, it’ll offer “divine feminine yoga” classes, among others.

Bridget Vizoso, a veteran floral stylist and the creative director at the Williamsburg-based Designers’ Co-op, has been practicing yoga for 18 years, having started at Jivamukti when it was a walk-up studio in the East Village. She recently graduated from Kelly Morris’s Conquering Lion program and has now brought Morris over to her new studio for 300-hour teacher trainings.

Not long ago, wild-child ex-con and party boy of yore Michael Alig took a tumble off a Planet Fitness treadmill. Where East Village chic was once all about falling off the wagon, it’s now de rigeur to fall from exercise equipment.

That Time I Tried Naked Yoga

The author.

The author in her usual attire.

This Saturday at Alphabet City Sanctuary, Young Naturists America presents a naked yoga session that promises healing through “crystals, vegan chocolate, and community love.” To find out what it might be like, we had Sally Lynn Edmonds attend a class at Bold & Naked, in Chelsea.

I tell my mom I’m doing naked yoga and she says, “Good, that’s your best look.” She doesn’t think much of the way I put together outfits.

My friend Scott thinks the only people who’d do naked yoga are narcissists who want to fuck themselves, but really I’m just curious to do yoga naked with like-minded people.
